Anyone know where to get the best Cardinals other than Gan at Lim Chu Kang (too far lah)?

And where to get Puntius denisonii (torpedos)? What's the average price for these? I've seen hilarious prices, some $5 for small ones & some S$8 for a big one...Rainbow sells at S$1x for a medium size!!! madness...

Can they be mixed with tetras?

Cardinals are commonly available at most LFS.

Puntius denisonii are relatively cheap here. I remember seeing them for US$35 each for medium sized specimens. Amazing. So you guys should consider yourself lucky that prices are so low.

    Cheers,
I have dwarf cichlids in my tanks! Do you?

I got 4 torpedoes at Wu Hu in Tiong Bahru last month. They have about 15 of them that time. Not sure about now. May have been sold.

well I started to accept S$5 to be reasonable as they are handsome fishes!!! but Rainbow's S$1x each for a S/M size!!! whoa!!! Are they that rare? from India is it? no local?

SO anyone knows where now for a good cardinal? & torpedos? the tampines blk 201plus has good cardinals, near my hse & got some from them...was wondering if there are any others nearby than Gan.

if you really want good red line torpedos i would recommend Qian Hu. A school of giant red line torpedos in a nana tank at the entrance of their quarrantine area. but may not be cheap and you most probably need a car to get there.

From what you wrote, you don't seem to have much knowledge of their husbandry in the first place. Even if you would have gotten them, I foresee that you may encounter problems keeping them.

Therefore, I would suggest you stick with the tetras etc. There are many many types of tetras available, very colorful and they should fall within your price range.

    Hi Quixotic,
actually the reason I know the prices is that I had bought them before. I had big, small ones that grow til they are big (with my tetras)...it usually ends up growing big & passed away by jumping out while playing chasing with one another when I'm not home (tarumatising for me!!!) or just died big (I guess old age? about 1 yr old plus).

I really like them for their beauty & grace in movement. That's why I decided to ask the question if they are really that unique & costly. And also the difficulty when I need to find one as some fish shopkeeper said it's seasonal just like good cardinals.

I bought at Qian Hu once, at a Sim's Drive shop & at the 201 Tampines shop.

About one year lifespan? What size were they when they died?

If you haven't realised, they can grow up to 15cm TL, and I dare say their lifespan would easily reach 5 years, if not 10 years (optimistic estimate).

So I will say it again that you are probably not ready for them... yet.

One other thing is that these fishes are endemic to India. Until recently, most stock are supposedly wild, which partly explain why their price tag may be higher. Besides, for fishes that can grow up to those sizes, with their stunning colours, and long lifespan, the price tag is frankly not unreasonable.

    HI Quixotic,
that's good info to know that they can live long so I can accept the cost! They are the most beautiful, elegant fish I've ever seen!

I bought an adult at only S$8 last year at the popular Clementi shop. Its one of those who had passed on. Its like u said, about 12cm. I bought 2 big (from above) and 4 small (from an Aljunied shop) at S$5 each. Some died "kamikze" style, the survivors died one day (recently) when someone turned off the bubbles. I do not know why they need a lot of air as my other tetras are ok in the planted tank without bubbles. Maybe of their bigger size needing more oxygen. My SAEs of the same size also died on that incident.

So here I am trying to find again to restart but can't find the same price! Maybe I'll go to Qian Hu as I know they have it, but kinda far! I know they sell cheaper than Rainbow.

Living a long lifespan is also dependant on the aquarist's fishkeeping skills.

In any case, if you intend to keep them, do read this article from PFK for good measure. You need to register and log in though.
