AC fans can get the ISTA brand one from LFS. I got mine from Y618, quite quiet, big and powerful. w/o fan = 29-30degC. w/ fan 26-27degC.

check the lfs directory for the address..

    depends on your budget
i used the ista ones before
not bad and quite well made

    but i prefer mr-cool
its even quieter, no rattling sound - i use in my bedroom and study room tanks
    very sleek and nice looking
hangs on the side or back and only a thin rectangular pipe can be seen above the tank
but double the price of ista

see this pic for example. in the top left corner

NA have some that are very efficient and quiet. You can check with Mr Chan.

hi lee, doesnt the Mr Cool cause a lot of rippling at the surface and induce more CO2 losses ?

why would that be the case?
any decent fan directed onto the water surface will cause rippling
to me, any co2 loss due to the fan would not be very significant

besides, co2 is relatively cheap compared to all the other stuffs, ferts and whatnot we chuck into our tank
a 10+, 20 bucks refill can last you months
hell, even the electricity bill beats it hands down.

you can always inject more co2 to compensate for the loss if you think the fan has an effect

Haha Mr Cool looks like a blow dryer. Somehow I personally prefer big fans like the ISTA ones. They blow more air across the water surface.

To cool an aquarium optimally, the fans should only blow across the water at a slight angle, gentle waves on the surface will increase air contact area. This will carry water molecules away fast. If the fan blowing too low into the water, it causes too much rippling and just stir the water causing CO2 lost and lesser evaporation.

When you blow dust off an object, do you blow across from the side or from the top down? Same principle, you want the air to carry the dust particles AWAY.

There's a reason why the ISTA type of fan is used in PCs, Servers and where cooling is critical.

Is Mr-cool good in lowering temperture from your experience??

What is your temp before and after??

Actually Mr-cool looks really nice... but I guess it is quite expensive...
How many red notes?? 3 red notes??

haha technically you are right on that
but i have used both types on the same tank and i get better results (lower temperature) with mr cool though

and for me the ista makes more noise, which is a nono as i have a bedroom tank
    mr cool is quieter imo

and well, everyone has his own taste
the 'blow-dryer' look appeals to me more

for me, based on the same tank
    no fan is 28-29 deg
with ista last time when i using it - 26-27 deg
now with mr cool - 25-26 deg

and yeah its quite ex, 3 and a half red notes to be precise
and this price is same at quite a few lfs that stocks mr cool
but to me i take it partly as paying for less noise as well so fine by me

    Just my 5 cents comment:

Mr Cool - looks good but not very quiet and it sounds more like a "not so noisy" hair dryer.

If look doesn't really matter, I would suggest you go for those PC fan lookalike with holder (clip). They are much much quieter and it does the same job as well to cool your tank.

Have been using mine for the past 2 years and I can hardly hear any noise at all. I used a vacuum cleaner to remove the dust when it's dirty.

haha i find it quieter than a few other brands of "normal-looking" fans i tried before leh
i find normal fans clip onto my tank give me a rattling sound, including the ista one also liddat

i think our ears all tune to different "frequency"
thats why the differing views on which is more noisy or quiet etc.
aiya as long as each of us is happy with what we are using, thats all that matters lol.

i also use vacuum cleaner for the mr cool

    hi lee1224

is your mr cool really so quiet? as mentioned mine sounded like a "not so noisy" hairdryer. maybe the one i bought is faulty.

actually wanted to use it on the tank in my room but gave up the idea because of the noise. the present "PC fan" i am using is really very silent.

Yes, there is a power switch at the bottom of the unit. IMO, it would have been ideal with a built-in speed control switch as well.

    i'm quite happy with it
in a way it does sound like a 'hairdryer" but i find it better than the ratling sound i get from normal fans

I remember seeing a cooling unit consisting of a cooling plate, heatsink and fan previously at Ben's. It eliminates evaporation as the fan is not blowing on the water. Only effective for small tanks and cost about 3-4 red notes.

I actually bought Mr. Cool fan on Sunday... it works really well lowering my tank water temperture from 28 to 26 DegC. I turn on my room's air-con and it hits 24 DegC

It sounds like a not so loud hairdryer though in the middle of the silent night... but guess it is still too soft to really bother my sleep

I think this fan is good in turn of effectiveness and design... but price also pretty nice
