possibly. the reason i had space for this tank was because my previous prized apisto jumped

what i did was buy some plastic black mesh from c328 and cut it to fit my filter pipes and lighting legs to act as a cover. light is not disturbed and my fish can't jump

yiyang,
that a beautiful planted set up and with full of exotic fishes! I must say that marbled hatchetfishes and zebra otos really beautiful!
To check with you.... these tank has any co2 injection or system bo?
Pm me the full cost of all your exotic fishes?
thanks
no co2 in this setup. i dose excel twice a week as well as 1/3 EI regime (based on Tom Barr's recommended low tech EI recommendation for Excel dosed tanks)

So you 'll have to spend on top up Excel every 3 weeks or 1 month ?
If i use C02 setup rather that your c02 system set up, will i save more?
thanks
i dose 4ml of excel a weel (2ml each time). a bottle is $15 and contains 500ml, so will last me 125 weeks, or over 2 years if i use it just on this tank and no others
the downside is that plants will grow slower with excel as opposed to co2, the upside is less maintenance too.
shall we take this discussion to my scaping thread instead eddy? it would be more appropriate there as here is the cichlid discussion boardcould an admin move these posts to that thread please?
Here's pictures of the simple cover i did. forgive the messy room, too tired to crop the pictures:

Very creative way... easy to cut and manage too... how much light does it obstruct?
it doesn't obstruct light as far as i can tell. my tank's brightly lit and i can't even see the shadow of the mesh
hairgrass has been spreading for some time, just saw that some runners were visible from the front last week and finally got round to taking a picture of it today. so much for some people saying 1. Gex is not good enough to keep hairgrass in and 2. hairgrass is impossible/hard in a low tech tank![]()

Probably due to light in that case, I was using 11w with my current 9L setup, keeping it low tech didnt allow hairgrass to creep with only excel. By the way, yours look like dwarf HG, though i noticed the right hand side leave resembles a curve leave similar to Jp variant.
it's japanese hairgrass, not dwarf hairgrass. in my 25cm cube the japanese hairgrass is also creeping with similar runners visible from the tank front. 13W of light in that case![]()

I'm using a 13W lighting for a 1x1x1.5 tank and the normal hairgrass is creeping. No co2 and no dosing.
To get hairgrass to creep, you can try trimming them.

Hey bro, like the way you fix up the plastic mesh, very neat and nice; best if can find a transparent mesh so that more light can pass through...![]()

looks like the mesh screen is obstructing a fair amount of light...
actually it isn't. there's no difference to the naked eye in the brightness of the tank before and after adding the mesh
