Who says Gex soil is inferior? It's not actually cheap to start with... so it's kinda expected to be able to sustain Hairgrass... be it dwarf or japonica. Perhaps someone should experiment using those generic (no brand) soil.

To get hairgrass to creep, you can try trimming them.
hmm, i didnt trim them, i just let them be, and yes heard from alot of people that trimming does improve growth.

    Bro Illumnae

Need some advice on how you grow your HG in a low tech 1ft tank as I have a similar setup but HG growing very slowly.
    1ft tank
    24 W PL
    7 hrs light period
    Dosing 2ml excel + 2ml Lushgrow aqua + 2ml Lushgrow Micro + 2ml KH2PO4 (stock of 1 teaspoon in 500ml).
    Thanks

hmm offhand my lights are lower intensity but i think 1 hour more per day. for dosing, i dose 2ml excel twice a week, 2ml wondergro macro once a week and 1ml wondergro micro once a week. other than that i'm using Gex substrate with a self concocted "ADA style" base.

dosing 2ml excel twice per week? i was dosing them on a daily basis, less than 1ml per day, no wonder my shrimps all died and HG experienced slow growth.

18W 8 hours a day for mine using a single 1W tube with no interval for me.

torque6, i dose excel only twice a week due to work/time constraints and laziness my plants are all low tech anyway, so the excel is just a little "pick-me-up" for them

oh i am. i'm using Tom Barr's modified EI for low tech. his recommendation is 1/3 EI for excel supplemented tanks, so that's what i'm doing using wondergro macro and micro
