I've been looking at lighting to start my first planted tank, and since prices in Australia are ridiculous, and i have no idea how to make my own i was looking at either one of these on eBay

I am not sure whether im going to really get into this, so i assume that 8x39w lights will be ridiculously excessive for my situation, oh yeah, 3ft 120l tank.

Is it difficult or expensive to build your own?

    Thanks

8x39W is too excessive for your 120l tank. Maybe the first is still acceptable.
I believe DIY in Australia should be pretty affordable, the parts that you require should be readily available in most electrical shops.
If you plan to DIY, do look around and note the pricing of the various components.
    - e-ballast
    - light tubes
    - tube holders/connectors
    - light holders (this you can use anything that can sit the lighting into)
    - loose wiring (can salvage from old parts)
    - electrical pinhead (can salvage from old parts)
    - starter (optional, depending on the tube type)

You can refer to the Equipment and Access section (http://www.aquaticquotient.com/forum...splay.php?f=13) for more details
