As far as I was taught the lily pipe should be just below water surface so that it can create a whirpool. It is suppose to create gd water distribution and clearing of surface scum.

hmm... I did see a tiny whirlpool just above the opening of the lily pipe, but it also creates quite a bit of water surface disturbance. Wonder if that's gonna lose a lot of CO2. Can anyone else help?
Cheers,
Sean
haha... when you said just below the surface, I thought immediately below it. I actually shifted my pipe upwards, so that it's almost touching the surface. I think I'll shift it down again to reduce the frequency I need to top up the tank's water, though the nearer it is to the surface, the smaller the particles it can suck down.
By the way, don't you get a lot of surface movement? I might get a CO2 tester later today to check it out.

Sean
Yes, there may be some lost of CO2 but it is negligible and topping up of CO2 is consider cheap.
i see. thanks bro!

Any idea where I can find this Lily Pipe?
hmm.. thanks.
Erm, I got it from Petmart.

how do i know what size should i get? for inflow and outflow. i'm using eheim 2217, but am unsure of my own pipe size.
Hey,
Those shown here at http://www.calaqualabs.com/Filtration.html are way more expensive than the one I bought from petmart. Go down and have a look!
For the size of the lily pipe, it depends on the size(diameter) of your hoses (your green eheim hose that goes from your filter unit to the outflow and inflow in your tank). The size is printed on the hoses. Note that, then go down to one of the above mentioned LFS and ask for a lily pipe, giving them the diameter of ur hose.![]()

According to my understanding, http://www.calaqualabs.com/Filtration.html uses german made glass to produce their lily pipes.
I have used the ADA and Calaqualabs lily pipes as well as the knockoffs from petmart. I can tell you that they are worlds apart in terms of quality.
The ADA and Calaqualabs lily pipes are not as fragile as the knock-offs and I feel more confident handling them. This is because the materials used are of a much higher grade.![]()
I see. I guess when one doesn't have too much money to spare, one must be much more careful! lol.
By the way, my water surface's still got some scum. Do you have it? I position the entire pipe underwater about 1 inch from the surface. There's the vortex, and it does suck things down, but there's still a sparse layer of oily film.

Guys
Personally, I got hurt from a china made glass diffuser. As I am fixing in the rubber tube, the glass suddenly break and pierce straight into my palm. The wound is so deep that the GP ask me to stitch my wound and give me antibotics for 1 weeks as they are worry about bateria infection. The medical cost alone is sufficient for me to buy an ADA diffuser. Now I am rather cautious in dealing with aquarium glasswares.
For those using glassware, pls be cautious and dont hurt yourself.
hmm... wonder why I have surface scum...![]()

Sean
