Hi there, just wandering when should we remove the parents? i read that we should remove the male put it inside a breeder box when there's fries right? And remove the female when her body's bright yellow disappear is it? I thought maybe we can try family bonding? Keeping everyone together is it possible? May encounter females fighting of males but if they seems alright without any injurys can we still put them together??? I read that we can actually remove the parents once the eggs have been fertilise sure 100% grown into fries? Won't the eggs gets any fungus?

There's just so much i really wants to know and learn from you guys and ladies if any out there.
    Cheers,

for me, i will only remove the male once he shows signs of aggression towards the female and fries, or if he is too stressed due to constant chasing or injuries inflicted by the female in brooding mood. if not, everyone stays in the tank. don't really like to disturb the breeding/fries tanks. apistos are pretty good parents, especially the females, so not to worry. but it does pay to keep a close lookout for any potential mischief which may take place. having tons of hiding places in the tank will also aid greatly, to spread out agression between parents and fries, parent and parent, and also fry and fry.

all my males thus far have proven to be bad fathers, either chasing the female till she eats the eggs or eating the eggs himself. I think that while there have been reports of males being good fathers, these are few and far between

yup i agree, so far i've only experienced fathers who are nice only at the infancy stage, whereby they will be in charge of patroling the entire tank and chasing off dither fishes while mommy tend to the more delicate care of the new born fries. but once the fries start to free swim and grow more adventurous, father will always be in the mood for quick snacks. not everyone is as fortunate as eman, who managed to keep three generations of apistos in the same tank.

What do you mean by three generations??? You mean bro eman never remove any fish from the tank??? Which means that if our apisto breed then fries came out we can leave it as per normal???

true, i remove my caca orange male 2 days after the fry were free swimming, the female has morph to orange body brood mode, defending her fry and biting till the male fins were torn

the female was left with the frys for another 2 weeks, but thereafter i notice she taken to eating bbs fed to the frys instead of bws, so I remove the female as well

the frys are now on their own for 1 week already

I didn't remove any of the parents bacause they don't seems to bit each other much.. The male has been a good father taking over mum's job looking after the fries. Hmmm see if there's anymore changes i think have to remove both the parents if not just leave it as it is.
