I bought a pair of rams recently. Both have a tinge of red at their belly and a high front ray at the dorsal fin. One is smaller than the other. The smaller one has more prominent blue spots. Size about 5-6cm. I observed that they often "kissed" or chased each other. So how to sex the rams?

In my case, both fishes have high front ray at the dorsal fin and red tinged belly. So are they male or female? Can someone post a pict of a male and female fish for me?

Simon, thanks for the picture. The question now is whether the female fish exhibits the red colour at its belly during spawning or has the red colour all the time?[]

Mine has it all the time.

Can't remember... is been a while since I got them. I have pics of them in my website gallery. See my sig for the link. I just realised that the pic of the male does not show his red belly colouration. The red on the female and rosy... while on the male its orangy. Here's a lousy pic I just took tonite. Female on the left.

Further observations this morning... may not be clear in the picture.

Both the male and female have the orange colouration just behind the gills, stronger in the male. But, Mrs Ram has the rosy patch after the orange.

Vincent, whats the difference between the local ram and the holland/blue ram? Aren't they supposed to be the same?

The colours of the locals are not as strong and they are not as big. The Holland ones have very strong and sharp colours and markings. Also look more robust.

Maybe u can try checking with Mr. Chan of NA and ask him when is the next shipment of rams. Cause I bought my 2 rams from him few mths ago and there were 2 left.

So decided to buy them cause they look good and wanted to surprise my laopo and family. Very nice and healthy, just that not so robust like what vinz said.

Can try Toh's Farm at Lck. Maybe Teo's too if not wrong..
    Thanks & Regards,
    Trevor

Teo and Toh were previously neighbours, Teo get their rams from toh.. Teo only deals with plants and not fishes
