power consumption of our lights...

my dad has asked me to stop running one of my existing 2 feet planted tanks cuz he says the power bill is getting too high and cuz i'm doing another 4 feet planted tank...
could ya'll help me find out how much it costs to run 72watts of light 10 hours a day for a month?
is it really costly?
i can't bear to loose my planted tank...[

= 21,600 WH
= 21.6 kWH

At 16.51 cents/kWH,
You're monthly bill for 2 x 36W lights = $3.57

You can use CanSupply's consumption calculator. They don't have an entry for 36W, so select 18W and double the number of appliances.

Ryan, no matter which part of the world you're in, power consumption is measured/calculated in the same way as described by Vinz. the only difference will be the rates.

haha! so no worries of losing your tank.
the possible culprits for high consumption will be kettle, water heater, iron, tumble dryer and air conditioner.

Apart from the above, the refrigerator can also cause high consumption.

dad says my house power bill is 500 a month...
is that high?
this is before i add the running cost of my 4 feet tank i'm starting now...
that will be another 184watts of light and 2 external filters...

I am running 6 tanks with total lights close to 800W. 12 hrs daily and my bill is way below $200. The part bulk of that $500 bill does not come from your tank.

it's usually the aircon that shoots the bill up. Keep it running for a longer period of time and u'll have to pay more.

lightings do contribute to the bill but not as much..

Ryan, go to the consumption calculator I linked above and calculate consumption for your household appliances. Then you can show your dad why his bill is so high... but then, he might say all sleep without aircon after that. [

If your aircon is on 10-12hrs daily, then it's not suprising that your electricity bill is so high. My bill is about $100/mth w/o aircon, the moment the hot weather arrives and the aircon is swiched on, it can shoot up to about $200+[

Since I had my tanks, I've not seen any significant increase in my water and electrical bills.

I agree... I doubt your new 4ft tank will add more than $20 bucks to the total bill. The air conditioners you run at home probably form 60-70% of your electrical bill. The only exception is if you are running a chiller for your tanks... in which case the cost will go up by more as chillers are quite power hungry.
