Its a common issue. Remove the cotton very slowly and carefully. I guess one or two torn roots are ok if the plant still has many others. Once the cotton is removed, you should be able to seperate the plants fairly easily.

I hate the cottons. What I did each time, is simple cut away til the roots are very short and for crypts, I removed all the roots leaving only rhisome. No issues, with good co2 and lights, the plants will regenerate itself easily.

It is easier to remove the coton inside water, so take bucket and water and remove it there. Just shake them a bit and it will come off. Some time they are using those filter cotton wool, that difficult to remove.

If you are buying stem plants, just cut away the stems from the pots up, the plants will take care of themselves.

The baskets usually come with stones within the cotton to weight them down, just place them in a basin of preferred delchronated waters, and remove slowly, what plants do you have by the way?

No worries, like i indicate in the other thread. Just make sure the rest of the aquatic plants do fine and the mosses will also.
