You could try using an Eden 501. It's an external mini-canister filter that is appropriate for your 1 ft tank. i believe one of the features of the Eden 501 is self-priming when plugged in. in my experience, the self priming function works very well, with the filter running upon plug-in, with the only downside being that sometimes there will still be pockets of air trapped inside that you need to manually get rid of. it poses no problem for your purposes though, as the filter still runs as usual with no overheating issues. only issue is noise, which won't matter since you'll be away anywayyou can always resolve the noise/trapped air issue when you get back
