Power failure resistant filter?

Hi All,

I have a "newbie" question here regarding filters. Currently I am using a hang-on filter. The problem is the filter will not be able to "re-start" the flow after a power switch-off or failure, meaning it is not powerful enough to suck up water from the aquarium to restart the flow. According to the manual, running dry will eventually leads to fire.

So, is there any filter that can re-start after a power failure? I am planning for a long trip and I don't want my house burnt down when I am away. My tank is a 1 foot tank. Any recommendation is much appreciated. I would prefer a simple external type filter since the tank is already so small.

You could try using an Eden 501. It's an external mini-canister filter that is appropriate for your 1 ft tank. i believe one of the features of the Eden 501 is self-priming when plugged in. in my experience, the self priming function works very well, with the filter running upon plug-in, with the only downside being that sometimes there will still be pockets of air trapped inside that you need to manually get rid of. it poses no problem for your purposes though, as the filter still runs as usual with no overheating issues. only issue is noise, which won't matter since you'll be away anyway you can always resolve the noise/trapped air issue when you get back

Eden 501 is a reliable (& quiet) filter & not too expensive. IMO, it's the best filter for a 1 feet tank.

I too used to have the same problem when I switched off the HOF and the outflow section went below the mark. Reckon the only solution then was to get a UPS but it isn't cheap. Cheaper to get a canister filter as adviced by bros.

Actually what you need to do is fill you tank with water all the way to about 1 cm from top. That way even when the light off, the water inside the hang-on filter high enough to start the sucking process.

I have tried that...it didn't work. The pump is not strong enough to suck up the water when there are air in the tubing.

If I am getting the 501, where should I position the rain bar? Above water level or below water level? Any particular angle for the "rain"?

i position my rainbar vertically. have not had problems with this positioning
