that's a killie, not a betta
Hi to all, just got a betta fish from C328 and can't find the name of this fish, also no picture in the photo gallery. Can anyone help to provide ID for this fish? And whether is male or female. Thanks.

It's is a kind of killifish, a male Nothobranchius sp. (I am guessing Nothobranchius rachovii). Females are smaller and has little colour in them.
Please note that this is an annual fish, meaning that they have a very short lifespan of up to a year or whereabout.
Here is a summary for beginners, to start you off regarding various aspects of killifish from the Americas Killifish Association (AKA)

Cheers,
I have dwarf cichlids in my tanks! Do you?
No, yours is a male. The female has very little colour in them. The last picture on this webpage is a female.

i saw quite a number of killies (both male and female)going for reasonable prices at Seaview when i was there last weekend, they may have a female of your speices, i'm not too sure. the address and phone numbers for seaview can be obtained from our LFS directory.
all the best in obtaining a mate for your fish!
Hi illumnae, thanks for the information, will travel to seaview this weekend. I got the address from LFs directory, at Jalan Kayu, Seletar farmway 2. Great![]()

hi all i just bought 2 pairs of Nothobranchius rachovii and kept them in a 20x20x30 glass tank. But they don't seems to be happily swimming around after 2 days. They prefer to hide behind the stone or just at the base.
I have no filteration just small plant and with white sand.
however the 2 females are more actively moving around
are they stressed?
Hi bro, sometime the males will fight. I think they are stressed and was new to the tank, that's why the males hide. It requires a lot of patience and Rachovii are very touching about the water quality. You should add on a filter and maintain PH 6.5 to 7 and temp.26-28. My 2 cent thought. Good Luck.

hi bro,
i saw normally they normally pack in small packet for days and LFS keeps them w/out filter...can inform me how will filter help?
They are fish that do not actually require a filter, if the tank is big enough and well-planted. A filter helps to keep the water clean, as any fishkeeper will tell you, so in the long run it helps. They just need a bare-bottom tank, with some mosses or Anubias as cover and a sponge filter will suffice. Some hornwort on the surface or floating plants help to keep them happy. Feed them with live foods only and they will breed easily if you have a female or two around. Males will fight constantly, but not to the point of death.
The LFS may sell them in tiny packets, but do you know that the AVA regards that practice as inhumane? They are swimming in their own waste for days if nobody releases them from that tiny prison.![]()
Fish.. Simply Irresistable
Back to Killies... slowly.
hi do you guys think instead of sponge filter i can use a small hangon filter?
Hi bro, yes you can use the small type hong on filter.
