Hi guys, i have read in a book whereby it claimed that using the waste of guinea pigs or rabbits are quite a good fertilisers. Is it really useful ? Will it affect the fish?

I've read somewhere about fermenting the rabbit waste first before using it, but i'm not sure why.

not so sure about the fermenting .. However, what i read is just take the waste and dried it under the sun. Once dried .. then just stuff it in the gravel.

Heard of this before. But it was during the time where fertilizers and equipments were not that wide spread. While it works, you should note that it is potentially messy and stinky, especially when you rescape.

Sounds like another efficient method to recycle animal waste!
    Points to consider:
1)Rabbit waste comes default in small pellets, making it easy to reuse?
2)They tend to produce ALOT so there's definitely no shortage of supply
3)They usually get thrown out anyway,so sweeping it and drying it should not be that icky of a task?As compared to dog owners who bring their dogs out for walks!
Though i'm quite concerned about the messy aspect of rescaping that CK Yeo mentioned.Wonder how bad it is?Anyway like rogerboi,i might try it as well since i'm about to do up another tank! Not to mention that my 6yr old rabbit is a waste factory!Time for recycling!

The idea of a potential sewage soup is not appealing to me. I vaguely remember something about thick gravel layer, well-aged manure, ammonia and green water. Go search the aquaticplant digest to see if you can find more information.

There is also a member back from the times of plantnutx that played with manure (goat's?) many many years back. Let's see if he shares his experience here.

    Goat?Whoah...thats hardcore!
I'm not even gonna ask how he managed to lay his hands on a goat!
What i'm guessing rogerboi must've thought of is that rabbit waste is manageable? As i've mentioned,it's quite tiny?Unless he's thinking of using of filling the entire tank bottom with rabbit waste as "base fert",i'm quite for manually inserting the waste at selected spots ala fertilizer sticks?

Goat poo sold at the goat farm and some plant nursery. Chicken poo has also been used for aquatic plants.
