i notice some of my java fern got a lot of black spot
are they healthy or must i pluck them out?

1 more thing any hardy fast growing plant to intro to counter ammonia level?

At first when you say black spots, i thought you are refering to the reproduction organs on the ferns, I had a few of them when i had my java, but these spots look strange

Is it on every leaf or just this one in your shot ?

not every, about 3-4 leaves...


i have yet to see my plants bubbled...is it normal?
btw my setup has no CO2 injection

Think no CO2 injection mean no bubbles. Can try flourish excel. Worked for me.

DIY co2 is ok, but i had algae issues with BGA while starting out my own. I was getting 3 bubbles per sec for 2 weeks, PH went down to around 5 by the end of the week, I couldnt keep any fauna for fear of them suffocating and by the end of 4th week when yeast dies, it leeches ammonia back into water.

I'm on 3.5L co2 with JBJ solenoid, constant outflow and im finally keeping boraras and snails after 4 months of cycling

my bubbles are quite consistent, 1 in every 3-4 seconds
i put very little yeast, app 1/3 teaspoon

i intend to clear the solution by 3 week before the yeast expire, or 1 bubble in every 7-8 seconds
this will prevent back flow too

I tried adding 1/3 teaspoon as well, didnt work too well as it takes 2 full days to start generating co2 on a 2L coke bottle. I thought yeast multiply so it is impossible to get a constant bubble rate? It will reach a peak where you will get close to 4 bps 24/7 which drives PH from 7.3 -> 5.0 in 3-4 days.

if i remember correctly
day 1 - 1 bubble in 5-6 seconds
day 2 - 1 bubble in 3-4 seconds
day 3 - 1 bubble in 3-4 seconds
day 4 - 1 bubble in 4-5 seconds
day 5 - 1 bubble in 4-5 seconds

roughly which day will be the peak...assuming for a period of 21 days

GREEN ALGAE!!!
will my cherry shrimps eat them?
anyways to control? eg lights on fewer hours

You are encountering the same problem as me a few weeks back, its BGA and no algae eater will eat it cause its a bacteria. Have to remove manually; or use eythromycin. Btw, has it started bubbling yet like plants in your tank ?

with DIY co2, finding the peak has always been difficult because we just dont know when yeast will start to die off and leech ammonia back into the water causing bacteria. BGA feeds on by products made by yeast+sugar.
