    Hi,

After 5 years of old concept, recent found some energy to renovate the tank.

For the better times of my old residents, see my signature link...

The old lapis which I threw away...

    Finally cleared the tank...

Used GEX for the new tank...

Laid the stones and gravel to form 2 hills, filling up the H20...

Got some good glosso from bro soulfinder78, and some difformis to exhaust nutrients in water column. Planting the glosso is quite a good form of exercise...

    Green alert! Hair algae formed...

Got some advices here. Remedies to the algae:1) changed H20, reduce light power and timing, up C02, manual removal, and add shrimps ...

Finally, for now, this is the look after 1 week of overhaul.

Those runners are spreading very quickly (within 1 week)... what's your lighting period?

They are out in a bucket while I took the photos. They were there in tank temporarily to suck up the water column nutrients, preventing algae above the substrate; So not really part of the concept. Will be dismissing them soon, once the glosso takes over.

Thats a nice tank, and you've got some impressive growth after 1 week. But do you not think that the rocks used are a little small and will get swamped when the glosso fills in?

    Thanks for the comments.

I am keen to add rocks, cos like you guys, I feel that the glosso would take the full stage soon. That kind of rocks, on sale where now? I bought like 4 yrs ago from Mainland. Seldom see them in LFS these days.

Might not add any more species of plant, strictly glosso I guess. For fishes, currently 13 rummy noses inside, 5 otos, 70 shrimps. 7 discus in another new 1.5ft cube. But adding them to 4 ft tank can spell doom for my malayan or even yamato shrimps.

When new to planted tank some years ago, I was so eager to try out all types of plants, and many types of fishes. The result is a tank of assorted plants, look like Dutch style, or if you like, 'chap-pa-rang' tank I had. Now trying out mono-plant concept... Zen.... hah hah.... must devoid myself of any worldly desire to buy new attractive plants.... Zen ... oneness.. hah hah... sounds like the teaching of monogamy.

Now the glosso look quite even. Will update with photo soon.

For rocks, you might want to go NA/Midori/ADA biotope. These 3 have the best, ideal pair with a glosso landscape.

i wonder what lighting u'reyou're using to have such a nice lawn within a week.

i'm using 55W PL for 2ft tank and some of the glosso are growing upwards. not really nice. and my growth for 3 weeks compared to your 1 week is really significant difference. ur fert regime ?

I was using 7x54W for my 4x1.5x1.5 to start with. But now down to 4x54W to have a growth rate which requires less trimming and up keeping.

For fert, I solely depend on those in GEX substrate. Not dosing column fert yet. As pointed out by Soulfinder78 to me, high C02 is a must.

My mid sized discus most probably will gobble my shrimps, so I really hesitate to include them. I might just put them in to try out.

For the Lapis, I wanted to give away. But from the look, it contains hell lotsa debris including some algae. I see it as a harm if I give it to others, so I have them returned to mother nature.

Thanks, I might go scout for the rock soon.

Gex soil alone may not be too sufficient without another base ferts. I have only the green packet gex soil and seems my HG went for a slow growth since sep last year, till i picked up DIY co2.

This is going to look really good in a few weeks. I think lots of maintenance too.

Gex soil is more than sufficient - it is at LEAST equal to ada soil =P it was probably your lack of co2 that did you in, not the soil. my jap HG is flourishing in Gex soil with no co2
