wow, you get pelia from the wild? that many some more and very beautiful scape.

Hi...i'm an aquascaping newbie from JB, Malaysia.
started this hobby some 5-6 months ago.
just want to share with you guys my low cost set up.
basically, 100% of the stuffs inside this tank were collected from the wild....the rocks, plants and sand, excluding the water.
it is a cheap tank and cheap lighting set, with a cheap HOB filter.
the total tank set up is less than S$80:
* Tank (S$7)
* Tank stand (S$ 9)
* Lighting set (S$ 25)
* HOB (S$33),
excluding the CO2 tank, which cost more than the whole set up combined. but i didn;t buy that either, it is a spare CO2 tank from a previous set up. but i guess if i want to make it more convincing, i can also try DIY CO2...but kind of lazy...LOL...
here's the photo right after set up:
water is a bit cloudy....perhaps coming from the mud from the plants!
tank spec:
tank size: 60x30x30
lighting: 18w FLx2 (6 hours)
filter: HOB
substrate: river sand
plants: mayaca (bg), pelia (fg)
CO2: 1-2 bps
Ferts: DIY NPK
cooling: none
this is actually my experiment tank, just want to see if i can make one decent looking tank with all the cheap/free stuffs.
the tank is actually 2 weeks old now.....everything seems to be doing well...will update photo next week!

wow, you get pelia from the wild? that many some more and very beautiful scape.
Nice setup.What is the plant on the foreground?

Hi Robert....thanks and yeah...Pelia from the wild! like a football field!! LOL
you should check out my thread in Mac!
Hi 4season....those foreground are wild pelia as mentioned above....just planted though, not yet grow.....but i guess there is no need for new growth as i practically covered every inch of the tank!![]()
here's how it looks like when i was "harvesting" them:

beautiful hardy plants!

Wow, nicely done. Cheap too - absolute winning formulae! Those rocks are so distinguished, i love them. They're big and eye catching but smooth and tranquil yet still managing to have an imposing affect on the tank. Well done!
Keep us updated!

Thanks Verminator....yeah i love those rocks too! not only those in my tank that you see, but i love every one of them i keep in my "rock store" too.....it is a lot easier to scape if we have nice hardscape...because i basically just dump them in the tank and the rock take care of the rest!
their color is fantastic! the shape is nice and natural, without sharp edges! and they come in variety of sizes...as big as few feet tall (if you have big enough tank for it) and as small as.....pebbles....
truly a gift from nature!!

is it from nearby JB? should show me next time when I visit JB![]()

unfortunately....not in JB
we took those rock quite some months back.....now it is very hard to find already. the place is now "guarded", can not simply go in already because apparently someone discover those rock contain Iron and they are mining it now!!
few week ago we went....can only find those very small pieces....the sizable one are all gone!...so i think the source is gone!
but luckily we took quite a fair bit during the previous few trips (accumulated like a small mountain)....so should be enought to set up many tanks in future LOL...
in my opinion, this rock is comparable to those "branded" Japanese rock......some said even better if you consider in the $$ factor!

the beauty of having house instead of flat, can accumulate rock until like a small mountain![]()

Nice refreshing scape you have there bro... more so after knowing that most stuffs are collected from the wild... tumb ups for you
4ft Planted Tank (approx. 500L incl sump)
Equipment:
4x2x2.5 12mm Tank with Sump. 4x55W 6,700K T5. Eheim 1262 Return. Hailea 300A Chiller. 5L CO2 with JBJ Solenoid Regulator. Lapis Sand with JBL Base Fert.
haha bro then i think since the rocks contain iron u should use it with red plants, then don't need to supplement iron.. haha. even more cheapo. But anyway i find your scape very natural! but where's the fauna?

ooo nice!!!
No wild crypts? Will only be complete with some wild native fish too.
I love the idea that the setup doesn't need to be expensive to look good. Inspirational for newbies and old birds alike.

Superb rock arrangement. The large rock right beside the "path" effect is fantastic and together with matching rocks, the aquascape has great depth in multi-directions. Well done!
In my view, you should continue to keep the plants in low profile (simple and like grassland), let the rocks rock (dominate) the show.

Hey guys...thanks for the nice words!
Ethan...
not "most" of the stuffs...but practically ALL the stuffs in this tanks were collected from the wild!
XiangHao,
LOL.....i wish the iron in those rock can be useful for red plant, but i doubt so. it is none disolvable in water!
Fauna? this photo was taken 1 hour after the tank was set up....i don't normally put show fish in my tank before i decided to take final photo! some algae crew will be in soon but not the show fish....i'm a plant guy..not a fish guy
CK...
yeah there was wild crypts too...but i didn't manage to take during my last trip....will take some next time!
wild fish...yeah i caught some, but didn't keep in this tank...here's the "wild fish" i caught....
FC...
totally agreed! will not let plant over-powering the rock and this tank! this tank should showcase the rock!
i guess the super-slow growing pelia foreground will be low profile enough![]()

Borrow this thread to share some of the wild aquatic plants harvesting process..
Collecting Wild Singapore Moss
firstly....you cut out the size and shape you want.....
and then you can lift the moss carpet up...real slow, so you don't break it into small piece, you want the whole big piece!
after that, you can roll them up like a carpet!
here's a close up shot of the Singapore moss....exactly the same type we buy in LFS! this emerse moss can convert easily in water given the right condition!

there are many other aquatic plants you can easily find from the wild....you have seen the Pelia i'm using in my tank, there are also Mayaca (also in my tank), Vivipara, UG, Blyxa Japonica, Crypts....etc etc...
will share more wild plant collecting process with you guys next time...![]()

wow amazing! where to farm singapore moss?
Stunningly beautiful and yet simple... I am so tempted to attempt a "freebies from nature" tank too. Wonder if I can find such beautiful rock over here![]()
