Have just started on a HC tank (Tom Barr's method) and need some advice on how to scape the tank. Below are some pictures of my tank. I am planning to have mini pelia on the flat horizontal surface of the DW and some java ferns on the vertical surface of the DW. Some long hairgrass behind the DW. Should I add some rocks to the right of the tank?

    Updated with Tank specificiations:
    Tank Dimension: 3 x 2 x 2
    Lighting Intensity(No of Watts): 6 x 39W T5
No. of hours your lights are on: 10 hours currently
Currently no CO2 injection, but will be using CO2 cylinder once the tank is topped up with H2O
    Type of Filter: Ehiem 2028
Chiller: Artica 1/5 (Not used currently)
    Substrate: GEX with Tropica Fertilizer

I got this inspiration from the Grandmaster.

    Way to go Krabbie!

That was one of my favourite tanks in Amano's older work. Can't find a U-shaped drift wood? Alternatively, stack two 2 driftwoods to form the shape.

As to your query whether to add rocks, I believe the impression the ADA layout was trying to protray was Minimalism, that is to create extreme simplicity that evokes feeling of emptiness and space. Hence, adding rocks on the right hand side may not be ideal if you also have this intention in mind.

I am sure your HC lawn will be impressive when it is fully mature and do keep us posted.

you might want to make some slope at the back. I found it to be too flat, may not look that nice if you see it at the same level.

    Hi,

HC require high lighting and CO2. Is your tank fully cycle? (didn't see any pipling nor water)

If not, you will have algue issue later.

He's using Tom Barr's method. No water in the tank at the moment.

Better, got the pics. I see you are trying to grow HC emmerse. Keep us updated should it start to creep. This method will cause some leaves to melt later on when it goes submerged.

Actually the HC has already started creeping, but the rate is really sloooooow. It has been almost 2 months since I started the planting. Initially I wet the soil such that the foreground is flooded, but background dry (due to the slope).

Those on the foreground didn't do well and I got hair algae attack. I removed those (mainly in the foreground due to the flooding, I think) manually and replanted. Now I diligently wet the HC by spraying such that there is no more flooding, not even in the foreground. I am trying this mtd for the past 1.5 weeks and looks ok so far.

btw, there are quite a few small spiders inside my tank now. I am so tempted to just fill up the tank with water ...

Oh yes, I have also updated my initial post with the tank specifications.

Krabbie, i initially thought you knew either about misting or spraying... growing HC emmersed form requires the tank to be wet mostly, not flooded. Just keep the spray on, dont worry about the slope, i had mine done with Jap HG, and the ones at the back of the tank up in the slope grew out to be the best of the lot.

    Some updates:
Went to CA today and bought some long hairgrass, normal hairgrass, cryptocoryne wendtii 'green gecko' and some unknown ferns (on the DW). Added water and it's still a little cloudy. Hopefully it will settle down by tomorrow. Sorry for the poor quality picture cos I am still learning how to use the camera.

Question: Shd I start the fertilizing regime immediately?

I think it will look nice once the tank matures. Good growth on the HC too.

And yes start dosing ferts immediately. You really need to blast your co2 as the HC grew in emmersed form. So lacking of high co2 concentration may melt your HC as they transform from emmersed to submerssed.

disastrous man! the front of the tank was manifested with BGA, some hair algae and this don't know what brown hair algae ... Not sure what's the problem as I don't have testers. I have changed the water, increased the fertilization (KNO3 and KH2PO4) and increased CO2. Still, the algae growth is faster than HC ... In fact, each time I remove the algae manually, a whole bunch of HC will be uprooted as well ... so sad to see my HC patch getting smaller each time I remove the algae.

Anyway, I thought might as well do a total blackout and wipeout everything to start from scratch ... sigh.

btw, does anyone know what's the brown algae?

Oh dear... those brown "hair algae" is really widespread... looking at your plants, I personally believe you can try 2 days blackout. 3 days even better actually.

But you are very close to your inspiration tank already... very close

Oh man. That doesn't look good. I have that on my HC tank as well. But mine is grown submersed from the start. I OD on excel for about 2 weeks and its gone temporarily. But it came back with a vengence.

I still can't figure out what causes it but my guess is for both our cases is that we don't have enough plant masses to absorb the excess nutrients. I have since restarted on that tank an am groing HC emmersed now. Getting good growth and I think i am going to flood the tank soon. I'm going to inject lots of co2 and start on ferts straight away.

Just wondering, did your HC melted after you flood the tank with water?

You could try some malayan shrimps. They just love those brown stuff.
