Yes, they are soft and a little slimy. The problem is that the HC will be uprooted when I pull them out .. that's why I thought blackout will clear them off once and for all. But this doesn't seem to work as well ...

Now that's really tricky![]()
Any SAE? I find them very hardworking in my 2ft tank. Sorry I am not experienced enough to offer you any definite solution... just throw out ideas as we go along... hope you don't mind![]()
mind? Of course I won't mind. I am more than happy that someone is trying to help to solve my problem.
I am worried that SAE will disturb and uproot HC. Can anyone confirm this?
once the hc is firmly rooted and established it will be safe
If you insist on curing, you’ll learn. But if you start all over from the scratch, you’ll save time (from curing) and money (to buy Algae destroyer/ remedies). Since your set-up has not fully mature yet.
It must be something terrible wrongful at the beginning stage, like out of filter, warming or something, something went out too narrow then could cause this, otherwise it’s not.
Inevitably the HC will be uprooted due to the BA has blending with them, further, since the HC hasn’t steadily grown yet. The fastest and efficient way to get rid of those annoyance BA is doing it manually (siphon or hand pick), because they have out break strongly. The Algae is occupy as a master instead of the plants in the tank.
you have shrimps in this tank? usually when i start out i will dump like 30-50 amano shrimp in my tank... just for additional algae control....dont know if they will pick on your HC but with this much algae..i dont think they will.
sorry. let me help you this. Please don't buy any more shrimps, fishes or any anti algae etc. Or even do blackout, It can't work for those algae because it too many.
For blackout, by the time, algae gone, your HC gone.
Best way, take out your HC, clean them if you got time. If not go to farm and buy again, alot cheaper. Near Pasir Ris. ( i stay in jurong also no choice to go Pasir Ris or malaysia)
You don't need to clear away the water but remove all algae.
But all this will come back again.
can pm me your tank detail, include pump rate , lighting power , height etc. I can solve your problem for rest of your life.

Hi letdoit,
Welcome to AQ.
Please note AQ is an international forum and SMS style language/abbreviation is strongly discourage here.
...I love rubies too ...

Probably sounds like a really rookie thing to say but can you grow it emmersed for say a month or two before flooding the aquarium? I wondered if letting it establish itself in the substrate would help so when you flood the tank its already matured and established within the tank?
Probably totally out of the question, but just wondered?
Last point didnt make sense in my own head =/
Point being that it grows without algae so when you flood the aquarium the plants are far advansed interms of coping with nutrients supplied?
Anyone follow me?
that method is recommended by Tom Barr and he says it helps to avoid algae problems
growing them emmerse resolve both rooting problems and algae ones. that was tom's main priorities.
Ok, so for a rookie at aquascaping (me). Would you say it would be possible for me to grow HC (cuba) emmersed with high light, fertile substrate and anything else needed for about a month or two to establish it and hopefully *fingers crossed* spread and create a 'lawn' in my tank?
I'm concidering attempting it when i buy my new 300 litre aquarium. I'll transfer my existing tank to the new 300 litre and use my 180 litre for a new aquascape project (possibly)
May be you can try this,
1) get some old filter media from your friends filter, that will speed up your bacteria, thot is very dirty, bacteria are those that stick to either your wall, filter media, canister, tank wall, plants etc... and not the water.
2) cut down your lighting period to 6hrs
3) get UV light on for few days(about 3-4days, after that on for 8hrs during lighting period), this should cut down the spreading of your algae.
4) cut down your fert to about 20-30% of your current dosage
5) change your water about 30% everyday
6) provide a good current flow of your tank instead of using Lily pipe in the beginning stage, use direct blow without the rainbar
I'm using Gex soil also, so far ok. Hope it helps.
Cheers![]()
