Toshi...the tank is very nicely done.

I noticed that you have a liking on island concept, is that true?

BTW, how long does this tank took to mature?

    Hi Jacian,

Really liked your setups in the AGA contest. I don't think they knew what to do with mine. [:0] Anyhow, I have been in an island-concept phase, but I think I'm going to be moving on soon to something else. This tank took about 5 months to really grow in fully & lushly.

Allen: As far as supplementation, I use:

    Kent @ about 5ml per 2 days
    KN03 to 3ppm
Fleet enema for P04 (to 1ppm)
    K2S04
    CaC03+MgS04 to Gh=5
    C02 at around 30ppm

    Cheers,

    toshi

Thanks, toshi. Before you move on, you should give your 20g a shot at the ADA contest. I really think you would stand a better chance there.

    Toshi,

What levels of K do you dose?
Vincent - AQ is for everyone, but not for 'u' and 'mi'.
Why use punctuation? See what a difference it makes:
A woman, without her man, is nothing.
A woman: without her, man is nothing.

    Toshi,

Thanks for the info! Just curious, fleet enema is a laxative? At least thats what pops up when I do a search on google... I see various types of fleet enema, I assume you are using the sodium phosphate version? If not, which type? Lastly, is there any reason you are dosing phosphates?

    Thanks,

    Allen

    Allen,

Fleet enema is basically just a brand of enema ...if you look up enema in a dictionary you will discover what it is. It helps certain individuals clean those hard-to-reach areas. []

In essence, your typical enema solution is a combinatino of sodium phosphate + biphosphate. So, the product is an inexpensive way in which to introduce phosphate into a system if so desired. Phosphate is a necessary macronutrient that becomes exhausted in *some* setups, despite the presence of fish, fish waste, food, and other organics.

So, in a system where phosphate becomes deficient, it becomes necessary to supplement it. Your typical well-lit phosphate-limited system can exhibit signs of stalled growth, slow uptake of nitrate, and lack of pearling. The last item is less scientific but when you happen upon a setup that is otherwise well-stocked with nutrients, light, & C02, test for phosphate and find that it is not measurable, the dosing of phosphate makes an big difference in a very short time.

In my case the dense growth of Marsilea and relatively light fishload meant that phosphate was being pulled down fast by the plants; I noticed it first in slower Marsilea spreading, and then the Java Fern leaves grew out quite a bit smaller.

    I dose K to approx 40ppm.

    toshi
