Went to Biotope today and bought 8 Crystal Red tetra (hyphessobrycon haraldschultzi) and drop it into a tank with my 2 Red Phantom tetra (hyphessobrycon sweglesi).

They look alike, if not for the size, I can't differentiate which is which? The Red Phantom is physically bigger but cost 1/5 of the Crystal Red. However both types school together (at least in my tank).

Anyone know how to differentiate them visually? Thanks.

from what i can see, the red phantom has a more pinkish colouration and cloudy looking body. the red crystal has a clearer transluscent body and is brighter red. i personally found the red crystal tetra to look like a cross between a serpae tetra and an ember tetra

The differences are obvious and stunning... if you notice them long enough..you can even see differences in behaviour... you need to compare adults to adults...not adults to sub-adults...which is what the current batch of H. haraldschultzi are... they are sub- adults.

looks at pictures from JJphoto showing the red phantom tetra

Then look at adult photos from minifisch

see the differences.. its quite a large difference actually relatively... especially when you're talking about "tetras". Shape of fins, colour, shape of fish, colours at fin tips, body markings, eyes... all are different..

    Thanks dudes for the clarification.

Just took a closer look at both types before scooting off to work, still can't see the obvious difference, maybe because both haven't colored up yet.

If any experts happen to pass by TB Ben, can verify it's indeed Red Phantom?
    Is it possible they mis-label?

The adults will be so so so so so red. Till it is scary.
I had two which is now, should be adult, and they are really red.
Ask Ranma. That two was the first batch brought it by EcoCulture.

Qianhu has this tank in the quarantine area with the adults. See to believe their redness.
