Hi, i am switching back to planted tank from marine. Need some advices on my current eqiupment that i can use for planted.

    1) MH light -> what k is suitable? i have 10000k now. My tank height is 2ft and lenght is 3ft. width 1.5ft.
    2) HO T5 -> is actinic blue suitable for planted? or need to change to 6500k?
    2) chiller -> what temp is suitable for shrimps? i have 3/4 hp chiller.

Does deep sand bed and refugium works on freshwater? i got a refugium with DSB, thinking maybe i can have a fresh water refugium to help reduce nutrients too.

I can't help you with either metal H or t5 as im not using either of them, but shrimps usually need 24-25 degrees constant to be stay healthy.

I am one of the convert. I am keeping my skimmer, MH, actinic blue, and DSB refugium.

    I only added a canister and co2 + reactor.

I think the slimmer can help to reduce surface oil (instead of the lotus leaf outlet tube), and not sure about how refugium helps, but I cant remove the 3ft refugium anyway.

I am so far in month 3. (taken first 2 month to desalinate my 6ft and sands)
I put in fast growing plants and a huge branch of fire-moss (from my other planted tank).
I cannot gauge the success yet as it is too early to tell. do share your experience too.

I have a chiller but I decided not to use it for this tank. it is in my 2ft shrimp + fire moss tank.

    do share your exp

ehh... yes... I took them out and washed them every 2 weeks, do 100% WC. hence it took so long.

for my fresh water tank, I am only keeping tiger barbs (many), silver shark (bala), and a big branch of fire moss from my other stable planted tank.

have to. i don't think the marine soil is suitable for freshwater. I will be buying 8 packet of USA black sand from C328.

The popular soil for fresh water aquariums are ADA and gex.

ADA and GEX are black too.
If you want to keep shirmps, you will need to bring down the PH to 6.5 which is what ADA and GEX can do. Unless you are keeping the new type of shrimp which requires higher PH >7 then you can use normal sand.

If you want to use plants with roots, then you will need to add base fert otherwise ADA or GEX is the all in one thing.
    What plants to use???? Arggggg......

ADA have different colors, you can view them at ADA biotope, thio has several bags and the widest range of soil there. Gex i think soil only comes in black and they do not carry big bags for gex sand.
