    hi guys,

i've been reading and noticed that there's varying photoperiod strategy that is being adopted by some people. for a new tank for example, some will give a 4 hours initially and slowly increase it to 8 or 10. At the same time i also notice people giving 4 hours interval meaning 4 hours of photoperiod followed by maybe a few hours of break and then another 4 hours of photoperiod.

can anyone advice me the difference between these strategies?

I read about it from here

    http://www.dennerle.de/en/HG10.htm

My new tank was overwhelmed by slime algae and other unidentifiable species.

Since I broke my photo period into 5h light,5h dark, 5h light, the plants have gotten the upper hand. It's quite interesting that only at the 5th hour do I see some of the slower plants start to bubble.

    hi,

thanks for the link. i think i will try your regime. btw, i'm planning to run my co2 at 1bps with the same photoperiod strategy that you've used. will that cause too much problem if i leave the co2 on at all times? my tank size is about 17 gallons.

You should have a timer connected to your lighting to turn on/off your lights. Connect your CO2 solenoid to the timer so that when lughts on CO2 supply also on and vice versa. Save on electricity and CO2 gas. For me 1 reason for the break in the photoperiod is to control algae and turn on lights when i am home. really not much of a point to turn on lights without anyone.

Siesta. Try searching for it in AQ.

If you are at work and have someone at home to help you, ask them to just turn off the knob to your co2 tank.

    try this method,
put air pump on timer when lights are off and off air pump when lights are on.

Do take note once your CO2 is off the PH changes also. BTW CO2 is cheap.

anyway since we're discussing this, i've got a 2 liter co2 botthe with me and my tank is a nano measureing 18 *18 *16 after filling with water (measurement in inches). how many bps should i be putting in the tank?.

I am using this strategy. Am using theben timer bought from NA, push the tabs to mark time for on->9am-1pm. off->1pm - 3pm on->3pm - 7pm, connect to your solenoid and lights for automatic dispersement of co2 at 0.5 bps for a 9L tank easy. Its keeping my BGA growth rate extremely slow, so i am glad, BGA usually spreads fast within 1 day of exposure to DIY co2, now its just staying at the edge.
