Hi, does java moss grows upward or do they spread sideway ?

unlike flame moss who we need to tie to DW, and since it only spread upwards.

Do I need to do the same with Java moss ? Or can I leave them on the substrate and they will spread horizontally as well as vertically?

    Hi,
i find that java moss growth will generally be more horizontal growth..spreaded out and not so much on vertical growth.

However, it does depends on your tank conditions such as light coverage and intensity which does affect the growth of moss.

    Cheers!

if tank has heavy lighting (MH 2 x 150w), but no cooling system (i.e. temperature at 29-30), will it still be ok ?

    lighting period is 6 hours.

Hmm, I suppose if flame moss can do well in your tank.. then java moss should do just as well. Java moss is one of the most hardy mosses around.

    Cheers!

actually, phrasing my question the other way round... if I have a 6ft filled with hardy fish (like tiger barbs, sharks etc), what type of plants can I keep in there, if the water temperature is around 29 to 30 degree (2x MH 150w for 6 hours)

I was hoping I can "grow" java moss in there

Haha.. fortunate 2 feet tank with chiller.. luxury tank! Strangely though, a 6 ft planted tank without cooling mechanism. Anyway, at the 29-30 degrees, Java moss will still be able to thrive very well with Co2 and fert regime.

Other plants that can do reasonably well in a warm temperature (29-30) are java ferns, nana plants, vallisneria(tape grass),hygrophila difformis ..even taiwan moss! However... there should be some fert dosing in a high light environment...especially for non-substrate rooting plants.

    Cheers!

My taiwan moss used to grow upwards when i had only 12w lights, i am guessing it works for any plants, low light-> so plants have to grow taller to reach the source.
