    Hi,

Would like to seek advise from people who rear Altum Angels before in a planted tank. Hope that someone who has experience with them can give me some advises.

    1) How many altum can be keep in a 3ftx1.5ftx2ft tank?

2)Any special rearing techniques for keeping them?

3)Is there any things I got to look out for while keeping them in a tank. ( I know that they are aggressive fishes that will attack other fishes or shirmps that can fits its mouth)

    4) Any special diet?

Thanks so much for your attention.

    Regards
    Nicholas

    hello nick,

i have kept 4 rather big altums in my 5x2x2 planted tank for 2+ yrs now without must fuss.
as for your 3 ft tank.....i would not put any more then 2 pcs, they fellas can grow up to 8 inch in height. unless u are prepare to change to a bigger tank.

just remember a healthy altum will eat almost anything, flakes, bits, brine shrimps...etc

malayan or small yamatos are out, my altums actively hunt them and 2 bags of 100 pcs of malayan will be completely wipe out in a few days !!!

small tetras as tank mates are ok as long as u do not mind losing a few pieces once in a while.
i have 50 pcs of cardinals when i 1st started and after 2 yrs....think i still have 30 or so pcs left.

hope this helps.....have fun and good luck.

"new" altums normally have this problem, not to worry cos if they are eating and active, they should be ok and will recover.

melafix is good cos it is not too harsh compared to some medications out there.
just remember to dose everyday for it to be effective.

good luck and have fun wth your fishes !!!

funny fish these altums. mine will attack any new fish that I try to add to the tank but they'll leave my 30 neons and 4 corys alone which where the original inhabitants.

yep, they'll take worms. Mine will accept frozen bloodworms. Leftover live food will make the water dirty.

    Hi,
I never kept altums myself but I know that they can grow quite big. The biggest I ever saw was a about 10inch high and I guess it wasn't a adult one (it look like a young fish, although it was wuite big). I saw normal angels which were about 1'1'' til 1'2'' (30-35cm, their body was bigger than my hand) high, so I guess altums could be much higher than these adult angels. So you'll need a huge tank for them if you want to keep them for a longer time (angels can live for more than 10 years, I also heard from 15 years old angels).

from my experience with Altums, min. height has to be 2ft and above inorder for them to grow properly. I have tested and fishes in a small tank stays small.

includes, zero shrimp populations, attack for newly introduce fishes

They do not require special diet, but food with high protein do help them grow faster. In my case, I feed beef heart

the biggest one I had measured 17inches from fin to fin.. so its very hugh

another thing, Altums carry parasite that is infect fishes like discus.. so beware
