Heya guys... don't really know if this is being posted in the right section of the forum.. was just really shocked by the doings/ignorance of a fishkeeper (not from this forum)...

i had responded to a WTS thread in another forum (not a fishkeeping forum), and just bought two tanks from a guy who was giving up the hobby. Upon arriving at his place to collect the things, i was shocked at the condition of the livestock.

One of the things for sale was a tank supposedly with a small school of galaxy rasboras. Instead of a swimming school of fish, i found many dead fish corpses tangled in a huge mass of mixed mosses, some of them fungused, and the two remaining live ones with disgustingly sunken bellies (they did not survive the trip home ). He then claimed that the small fishes "eat the floating duckweed" and there is no need to feed them, because they can feed themselves.

Looking at the condition of his fish, i really wonder how he could actually believe that.

In the other tank he was selling me, he had some endlers, which he boasted were healthy and boisterous. Instead i found, once again, semi-starved fish, some of which were horrendously deformed (for eg. a male endler with a body permanently bent in an S-shape). This tank again was a horrendous tangle of mixed moss species. As further evidence of the fact that he doesnt feed the fish, there wasn't a single snail in sight .

I am shocked and horrified that anyone could be callous enough to treat other living beings this way. Upon getting home, i had to dispose of the corpses of all the dead fish. Not a single galaxy made it out of that hell-hole alive.

I feel sorry for the fish already!I'm surprised you took all the fish home! Did you pay for them or were they given together with your purchase of the tank sets? In any case...dead bodies?Fungused?Tangled bodies?Deformed fish? And claims that they were feeding on floating duckweed with sunken bellies?Lol~That must've been a "Do you know WTH you're talking about?" situation for you! Whoah, i've bought pretty bad conditioned livestock cheap before but never THIS bad?Just curious...where did you get them from?

Bought it off this guy from another forum... he was selling the whole thing as a set, together with an eheim 2213 filter. I was so mad when i saw it, but controlled my temper.. am so glad that he's quitting the hobby. i hope he never ever returns.

it was so heart-breaking, watching the last two galaxies slowly breathe their last.. i tried my best to minimise trauma on the journey home, but don't think their emaciated state afforded them enough resistance to withstand the stress..

Felt sorry for you and the fishes that live in his home.. You should have rejected them since they were in such bad state.. Think you have the rights man.. That fellow should also never try to sell such bad conditioned fishes to people in the first place..

Ah well... only took up the offer because of the filter actually. was just thinking i could put the galaxies together with my resident quartet. I'm kind of glad i took the fish, at the end of the day... even though i couldnt save the galaxies, at least i managed to salvage the few struggling endlers he had left, including the S-shaped one.. they're now swimming and eating (ravenously) in the tank i'm using to raise my kribensis fry.

If anything, at least the endlers made it out alive..

Doesnt he know galaxies are under threat?! You have the decision not to trade or do business with him, there isnt a need to take it casually. I would have seriously told him off giving him the rationale and reported him accordingly in his residing forums.

Oh well...this IS a hobby afterall? It's akin to a good friend of mine who dumps his Nikon DSLR and lens in a tool box! Argh~ Actually fishsoup did make a very good point,he was in it for the Ehiem filter? I'm guessing it must've been a pretty reasonable deal in the 1st place that's why he put up with the crap? Hey,if it was me i'd do the same?

Good move. At least the fish get to end their misery. There is a thread on another forum which is kind of like a tragic comedy. The thread starter insist on dumping 100 cardinals in a 24G tank despite 4 pages of people telling him "too much fish", no cycling, amonia poisoning, nitrate spikes, stock wipeout etc... His last post was that he was going back to top up the number of cardinals to 100 again. 'The LFS boss says no problem'.

Some people are just too stubborn to listen to what others say. There's nothing much we can do if they insist on their ways. Tough luck for the fishes.
