The necessary essential of photography is simply to be able to take nice photos. To do that you need to learn composition and lighting, how to use your camera effectively, DOF, etc. All the basic stuff that is absolutely important to photography.

I know using more flash, getting lens with higher magnification, etc are better. But a lot of people just use it blindly. For me, a picture of a closeup of some bugs eye showing the patterns is a good picture. But this kind of picture usually doesn't create a lasting impression on me. It's picture that look and feel good that stays in my mind for a long time. And these pictures doesn't have to have the highest magnification or be the sharpest in the lot or even have the most even lighting. And yet, these are the things that a lot of people talk about nowadays. Are they that good that they don't need to talk about the essentials already? I know I am not.

hmm.. i like very close shots that show intricate details of a bug that you can't see with the naked eye, esp those less than a cm long. But 'environmental' shots are also wonderful to show the wider habitat and habits of the animal. Sharpness (whether high DOF or selective) and decent lighting (doesn't have to thoroughly even studio-quality), I find, adds greatly to a pic's quality, along with composition (giving space, positioning/angle, etc), and these come with practice in the field, both in fiddling with the gear and getting to know the subjects better.

A reasonable amount of quality is appreciated on the basics and if it's very high quality then the value of the shot has of course much more WOW factor.

For newbies-asking the right question after doing some homework is much appreciated. Most of us don't like to be treated like dictionaries and usually would just stay mum on the extremely basic.

So I appreciate those who unselfishly take the time share their pictures and tips.
