Was thinking of getting a car .Considering those within the mpv range. Perhaps a Toyota Wish or a Renault megane Sports tourer..Anyone has any reviews on this two?? Thanks.

remember to include the cost of interest if you are comparing "total cost of ownership".

I think the Toyota Wish is cheap and good. It was at one point the cheapest Japan made MPV on the market. Not sure if it can still hold that claim. It's a common car so parts and service is not too much of a problem. I heard Borneo Motors will only bring it in around June.

Try going the CNG way..Petrol is getting more and more expensive. And what choy have said, do factor in your total cost of ownership

The sports tourer is running a 1.6? Heavy car + small engine= Guzzler. Handsome car though. And the boot space is useful for a CNG tank.
Rear seats for compact MPVs like Wish, stream, airwave are good for dogs and legless people. However a friend who recently rented an airwave in Japan was very impressed with the performance and fuel consumption.

actually I really want to get a Landrover Defender, but they only have diesel.

why? in an accident, you win (unless you are dumb enough to hit a truck aka 3-tonner); the idiot parked next to you opened his door too fast, you win; you can park haphazardly in any angle you wish, you neighbours will stay away, you win; you don't need to wash it, saving water, $$ and energy, you win again! and no one would even consider going near your LR to scratch the paint work because first they can't find the paint work under all the dirt, and second they would probably damage their keys, coins, screw driver etc.

and finally, the rich brats who stop next to you in their shiny 4WD are merely spoilt whimps, real men with balls drive THE 4WD, preferably in Temasek Green.

For a budget station wagon with reliability ,good gas consumption but a little short on the looks department, you can consider the corolla fielder. I was considering it last year but some change of plans, so no new car. Currently I have a fixation on the honda crossroad. Looks like a Hummer.

Been looking around in sgmart. Some good pricing and ad though. People been telling me toyotas are light and petrol saver but when you drive at highway long distance , you can feel a slight sway.

I think that applies to all MPV as they have a slightly higher profile. I must say that the Toyota Wish is quite economical with petrol. If I'm travelling on highway, I can get up to 12 plus km per litre. On hindsight, it was a wise choice as the petrol prices recently is much higher than it was 2 years ago.

even you successfully register Diesel car to private but also drain your yearly bonus by paying the road tax by double or triple times more than petrol driven car.

if you are concern get a brand new Wish fitted CNG ...there are hundreds CNG stations all over Malaysia if you plan to drive up with CNG.

I' waiting to scrap my 3 yrs old Nissan N16 for Toyota Wish with CNG attachment and a more room leg space in next year. My boys are getting bigger, their legs getting longer too
    cheers

in case anyone gets confused by the discussion of diesel cars. I am not suggesting anyone get a diesel car or that they are viable options. they are not, I just fancy an old Land Rover

i used to own 1970 Land Rover 27 years ago, this jeep is still standing and a good condition to drive to any road and jungle's terrains. Its even able to "breathe" if the engine is fully immerses under the water while this jeep crossing the river.
    cheers

I've had enough of landrovers from the army days. The rover issued to my section ate a cat! Kitty was sleeping in the engine bay when they started it.

By the way, if 2.0 SUVs are considered, look out for the Suzuki Vitara and Subaru Forester. They should be lowering the price soon as there are new models coming up this year. But these are guzzlers though.

Anyone who can list some of those cars/SUVs/MPVs that are not really a petrol guzzler...?

I'd say in general, Toyotas and Hondas give the best consumption. Get a list of the cars you are interested in and start doing your homework. Don't trust the manufacturer specifications too much. Go to the local car forums to look for the owners feedback.
