    Dear All,
Someone in my family (not a kid) has deliberately poisoned all my fish. No fish survived. I know that detergent was used as the modus operandi. But i need to be sure in order to point the finger. Is there anyone i can go to for a lab test on the tank water to confirm that detergent was used?

Lastly, can the SPCA or any other organisations take action against this criminal in the event that i have all the necessary evidence?

    Thanks.

Sounds real bad. I've no idea regarding lab tests or the actions that can be taken. However im my humble opinion, I think it might be advisable to think over the issue for a few times and be sure before pursuing any legal action against your own family members.

err... I had a similar encounter before and i had a VERY BIG fight with my mother becasuse i thought that she was the one as she has always been very unhappy with my fish keeping. I was having 9 2ft and 1 3ft in my room then. The 3 ft was a planted and the 2fts were discus tanks. One faithful day after school(i was in poly) i came back to find that all the fish in my planted were dead. they were all floating and the whole room stank!! plus there were bubble foams on the water surface. The very first thought that came to mind was that my mother added detergent into the tank because she knew that the 3 ft was my pride.

But as i grew up and with internet access, I learnt that those foams were actually caused by change in water parameters due to over crowding. ammonia spike? Till today, i have not seek my mother forgiveness over that fight.

Hence, like what yi xiang says, NO doubt that we are all crazy over our fish and plants, but blood is always and will always be thicker than water...

    My humble sharing.

Bro.. Like I told you over the phone.. Relax.. Try not to persue the matter further.. The truth might lead to more quarrels and other family members at home might be affected due to this.. Let bygone be bygone.. I agreed with what the rest of the people here said.. Family ties are far more valuable than fishes although no doubts they are precious lives also..

detergent would be alkaline i believe...
    just as closure la...

btw, how come someone in your family would do such a thing?
if you think it's too personal, then ignore my question la...

hope you get over this soon... you have my condolences..

Must be pretty bad to really consider legal actions.

I'm guessing stormchild just wants to find out what happened to his tank? He probably wants to get the exact reason why his tank crashed and confront that particular person with ample evidence. ALSO...i'm guessing when he mentioned "family" he literally meant it as people staying with him?Maybe even flatmates? Heard of stories where Flatmate A hates Flatmate's B dog or cat and then does something horrendous to it when owner isn't around etc...Fairly common i suppose? As johannes mentioned,an immediate possibility would be PH etc? Further tests would definitely require more advance equipment.

I'm guessing he meant non immediate family members, in-laws perhaps?

Thank you all for the advice.

I have decided against any action this criminal. But that doesn't take anything away from the fact that it was a malicious thing to do. this person has no regard for precious life and the fact that all living things have the right to live.

I can only hope that my children or my children's children will never be anything like this person.

Reading inbetween the line, you've listed " this person has no..." guess you've already pinpointed someone.

First of all, I would like to know the size of ur tank. Second of all, I had a like experiance with my fish, I came home from the petstore, and found all twenty of my fish dead (somme were very expensive) I thought, it could only be my dad, who is a scientist who always tries to save money by using straight chemicals instead of buying them from a store

. But then I found out the Ammonia, the Nitrate, and the PH levels were off the charts, it had been two weeks since I had last tested them. So you shouldn't start pointing fingers and stir up dessention, then it would lead people in your family to much distrust. So test the water, and then see what comes up of it.
