Reliability of Taiwanese made Co2 regulator+solenoid at NA

Has anyone bought the taiwanese-made co2 regulator+solenoid from Nature Aquarium? Chan quoted me $260 for the whole set plus 5L co2 tank. the solenoid is Italy-made. Anyone who has used this, I would appreciate it if you could share your experience with this equipment.

The other brand that Chan is selling is the Dennerle brand which is much more expensive. About $300+ for regulator plus co2 tank (no solenoid). I believe Dennerle should be much better, but the cost is so much higher. That's why I want to know if the Taiwan brand is ok, otherwise I'd rather spend a bit more on dennerle now rather than upgrade later when I find the Taiwan brand to be unreliable.

Anyway, NA is the only place I've checked out for co2 sets. anyone else knows other places with competitive prices as well?

    Many thanks

I had a bad experience with the taiwanese regulator recently... about 3 weeks ago

The regulator gave way (the solenoid was ok though). The pressure suddenly surge on the output end. And the worst thing is that I was away on holiday!! Guess what... all my fish died...[]

I have returned the regulator to the LFS (not NA). The guy say he will send it to the supplier. But I have not heard from him since then... which reminds me that I should call him tomorrow.

i guess cannot "use one stick to trip one whole ship", i.e., not all taiwanese made regulators are the same. I bought a taiwan made manual regulator from Rainbow before. After about 1.5 months, the output was very erratic, either too high or not dispensing at all. basically, I cannot control how fine the dispense/bubble rate is. According to Chan, you need a pressure step-down regulator so as to have more control over the bubble rate, which he claims his taiwan regulator can do.

well, after the bad experience from rainbow, i'm kinda suspicious of taiwan made stuff...that's why i'm asking for opinions...

I'm too very "scared" of using taiwan products, but taiwan regulators are okay just make sure you have a good solenoid. I've heard good product comment on bioplast solenoid .
    Cheers!

I've been using the CO2 set from NA for 6 weeks. No problem with the Taiwan-made regulator nor the Italy-made solenoid so far...(touchwood).

I'm sure a lot others can testify the reliability of Chan's product.

Give it a try, if price is a concern to consider the branded ones.

    Cheers

I need to check for sure when I get home, but I remember when getting the CO2 set from NA (same $260 set), Chan said that the regulator is a US one and only the soleniod is from Taiwan....

Perhaps you want to ask him again.....I think it's worth getting a good regulator though.....safer

I believe the regulator is as important, if not more important than the solenoid. Solenoid usually are more prone to failure, but impact of a regulator failure is more serious than the solenoid failure. Remember that the job of the regulator is to reduce the *dangerously* high pressure of 69 bar down to a safe working pressure of 1 bar.

The regulator I got is the one without the knob to control the output pressure. Normally, the output pressure is always fixed to about 1 bar. Mine however suddenly gave way when I was on holiday. The output pressure gauge was stuck beyoud the maximum mark which was 10 bar. The CO2 tank was emptied. My fishes were dead. The solenoid was working fine on the other hand.

It is not nice to read on the news: a hobbyist injured due to a faulty CO2 regulator.

    bclee,

Not sure about your regulator but mine has a knob to tune the bubble rate (less than 1 bar). For a regulator like your's, how do you adjust the bubble rate without a knob? Maybe you used an additional needle valve?

    Just curious to know.
    Cheers!!

Hi, I got a taiwanese made JBJ regulator n solenoid for about 1month plus so far so good(touchwood). IMHO buying anything is really depend on luck sometime even the best product can crash on you.

thanks everyone for sharing your experience. Uncle Catz and Eggz, if you don't mind, I'll just check back with you guys again if the NA Co2 set holds up. I'm intending to buy it only in early 2003 (after bonus time of course [:] )

needle valve is a flow control valve used to control flow rate, ie. control the bps.
