I get redder plants with low pH not low temp.
My tanks have been experiencing temp bet 26º to 27ºC lately becausing of the weather and perhaps the fan helps as well[] .....something I'm not complaining[

There's one thing I notice with these cooler temp is that the red plants are much redder than normal at around 28º to 29ºC, not that I add add any more fertilzer than normal,
So is it true also that cooler temp does helps with the redder plants, Anyone to advise??
Thanks

my tank is at 25 degress everyday with this weather and with a AC fan []
25ºC , wow that's great!, wish the climate is always like that in Singapore so no need for chillers!
...I love rubies too ...
Ken
LOLz, only applicable to smaller tanks
Yeah you're right, big tanks still need chillers....

Not really so... I've done ok without a chiller and just 1 AC fan for my 5ft tank... my temp is 28-29C which isn't very cold, but the plants don't seem to complain much
Allen
just an idea.
maybe those with big tank may want to try covering the sides and back of tank with styrofoam to reduce heat absorption. maybe will give you close to 26deg. who knows...

I think the main bulk of the heat comes from the lighting. So I think styrofoam on the tank wall may not the so useful.

ya my tank is small.. only 2.5ft.. if only singapore have such cooling weather all year round hahaha..![]()
I think one of the biggest battle in keeping planted tank in Singapore, beside fighting Algae, is keeping the temp down, especially those of us without chillers. Probably in places like Japan or Gemany they don't have such headaches... []
unless you keep your tank in aircon room here...hey those guys' tanks temp must be really low these days....[]
...I love rubies too ...
Ken
instead they invest on heater and substrade heater which is opp of us.[:]
Cheers!

actually their battle is somewhat harder... They have seasons to contend with which result in larger swings of temperature. One of the advantages we have is that our climate is stable. If a little rain and cloud can help bring your tank down to 25C, imagine how they struggle between 40C summers and -5C winters.

"imagine how they struggle between 40C summers and -5C winters."
- wow, you mean that's their room temperature?[:0]
Allen_1971,
I've just set up a 5' planted tank recently. Am curious about the lowest attainable temperature for a 5' tank with fan as the main cooling agent.
I've just added 2 DC fans about 24 hours ago and the temp has dropped from 30-31 to 28.4. That's not bad but thinking of going even slower by running 4 fans. However, not sure whether the temp can go lower in a bigger tank.
Would appreciate if you share your experience on cooling your 5' tank.
Thanks,
Roy
The thread is kinda straying from thr title.
Redder plants resulting from lower temp maybe (IMO) due to the fact that they are more comfortable in the temp region.
Correct me if I'm wrong.
i think for a big tank the temp dun realli Fluctuate that much... & if i'm not wrong the lowest the temp in a 5ft tank can go with a a/c fan is 27 but usually it's stays at ard 28.something or ++ so if u wanna your 5 ft tank with cooler water invest in a chillerQ!----------------

hello all,
talking about chillers. how much is the cheapest chiller available?[]
errr.... lets keep focused guys... if you wanna ask about fans and chillers, drop a post in equipment section?
Anyway, in reply to the question asked me, vinz basically covered it.
Allen
I also have a 5' tank. But without hood. Just 6x36W PL lights on stilts. And located near the window. The breeze cools it somewhat. The water feels quite cool. I will try to measure the temp and see.----------------
