Hard water is water which has dissolved solids in them, for example minerals Na, Mg, Ca......

If you remove them, the water becomes soft.

Distilled water is the softest water that you can get as there is nothing disolved in it.

Only carbonate hardness Kh (Hardness caused by dissolved carbonates) have a relationship with Ph.

Or understand the language of fish... Just kidding.

Well, but I guess for most people it does not matter really about the softness and hardness of the water if they are only keeping fish, and have no intentions for breeding. Correct me if I am wrong?

As for kH and pH relationship with regards to Co2ppm, think one can just max out Co2 (provide adequate surface movement to allow for gas exchange) and that should be alright.

    Cheers, Christophe

Base on all else being neutral i.e. substrate or elements that doesn't affect the parameters. KH is co-related to ph. If your kh is around 4, your ph should read about 6.5. From which hardness is how high/hard your kh is.

Ph refers to whether the fauna prefers acidic or alkaline like water parameters. Nature has created its own buffer/kh, therefore we haven't not heard of a ph crash in the wild. It is quite common when we establish our tanks, we're acting like God to set these parameters to recreate their natural ecosystem but via using chemicals or other elements, thus the confusion.
