Getting just one Discus for tetras tank...

I was looking at the discus fishes and I thought it would be a nice touch to have just one discus in my community of tetras.

Is that a good idea? If so, what kind of discus should I be looking for? I want a hardy type like X-Ray tetras.

And, what should I take note of if I have a discus? Or it's a totally bad idea?

Having groups of any fish is recommended as opposed to keeping them on their own.

The thing with discuss is they can be very finicky with water conditions. They have to be just right. Too far astray of each species recommended conditions can result in problems arising quickly. If kept in a bunch (5 is a good number) they can look amazing if water conditions are kept at an optimum.

I do love discus because of the fact they happily share an aquarium with other fish like tetra's and such, unlike angels which harass smaller fish.

Discus do attack smaller fish sometimes too.

What is the tank size? Without knowing this, it is difficult to advise because the number of fish to be recommended is absolutely associated to the bioload that can be supported.

I have a 3ft tank, and about 50+ fishes. There is one lonely angel fish too.

What kind of condition are they sensitive to?

as a rough guide you should keep 1 inch of fish body length to every 4.5 litres your tank holds. So i hope you have a wide and tall tank too for 50+ fishes. That's extraordinary.

Big enough for say... 3 discus?

I think you already have enough fish in a tank of that size. Putting more, especially large species like discus, wouldn't do healthy for them or your existing fish.

My tank is 100x40x50cm and i have about 27 fish in, says what fish in my signature and mine is technically full to the brim in terms of stocking levels. My clown loach have stopped growing at about 2.5inch in length due to the tank being full and very little growing room left for the fish.

I'd seriously concider what you have in your tank and limit it, certainly at the very least don't add any more fish!

If you keep discus in a crowded tank you will end up stunning them if you get small ones,if you get the big ones the smaller fish might get eaten.

I share the same thinking as you. I have keep discus with cardinal in my 4 ft tank. It was fine for 6 months. Then one day the discus decided to treat my cardinals as food. The cardinals was reduce from 50 pcs to 0 in 1 week time. Expensive lesson for me.
