My gravel grain size is 6-8mm and i wanted to know if this is too thick to create a lawn effect with Eleocharis Parvula.

If needs be i could crush my existing gravel down to smaller granules, or failing that i can just go out and buy some aquatic sand/gravel that is smaller. I don't really want to pay higher prices for 'technically sound' tried and tested market brands. Just a growth promoting substrate will do.

Obviously i know the smaller the grain size the better in most cases, and i'm aware mine is a little on the larger size when it comes down to it. Just wondered what granule size you lot all have/use and if you have any recomendations as to what size i aught to aim for. If you think creating a lawn effect is unachievable, please do not hesitate to voice it aloud.

    Thanks

im using larger grains for my 1ft tank for hairgrass but they are not flourishing as fast as most bros here using smaller grains soil. Howevever, i have never grinded the larger ones -> smaller and use them. If it gets too powdery, it may cloud the water, however, if you are out of options, it might work.

It should be alright. I've problems with the finer ones instead of the bigger ones.

I had worries that the my grain size would prevent runners from spreading far enough from the parent plant, based on the fact my crypt parva, and various other larger forms just form clumps, none of them spread anyway. So i'm hoping my HG spreads when i get it in the next week or so.

I am currently having larger grains GEX soil, perhaps this is the reason why it takes longer for me dispite have 12w with co2 to creep as compared to most bros here using fine grains ??

Larger grain sizes certainly do prevent it spreading a little, i've read up on it. Smaller smoother grain sizes, such as sand allow the roots to spread properly. But larger grain sizes are equally good for growing plants in, just takes longer for it to have the same affect.

thanks for the clarification, as this was the only parameter i have setup differently from bros who had better success with hairgrass.

Well hopefully within the next month both of us shall be able to spread some information to others concerning HG with larger grain size First off, i need my plants to come that i ordered Friday (23rd May). I do hope they come soon, i ordered them express delivery, so aught to be any day now. Never bought online, and so i'm paranoid i've been duped . MizuWorld has a great reputation i see, people on this forum are happy customers, so i'm hoping the european version is just the same.

Shall update on the progress over coming weeks when my HG finally arives

Edit update: My current avartar shows a standard pot of HC "cuba" in the gravel i currently use, as you can see it looks quite large, atleast it does to me
