It looks like an Apistogramma sp "steel blue" to me, rather than an A.borelli.

Good eye there Chongyu and Eugene. Is this a hybridized species?

Yes. It's the hybrid. Not a naturally occuring species.

This thread will be of interest..

Seems like some more hybrids hit our shores. Saw a long fin A.sp "Blue Steel" in C328.

Interesting, the thread mentioned that it is orginated from singapore. But strangely not many people know of it's hybridized from which specis?

Anyway, it doesn't really look so bad.

Most shops name it as borelli, thought it looked like one borelli to me. Though was wondering how come the blue looks so metalic looking and body looks more slim. So its confirmed a hybrid huh. I hate hybrids, i think they should seriously put a stop to this. Hope our fellow apisto lovers wont start to breed them at home.

Its easy to mix A. sp "steel blue" up with A. borelli, but there are quite distinct differences too. A very obvious one would be the tail shape and pattern.
Personally i wouldn't keep these fishes either. Besides there are hardly any females available too.

they're hard to breed at home (thankfully) for a few reasons. Firstly, as chongyu mentioned, usually only males are released for sale; secondly, being hybrids, i believe i read somewhere that they are frequently infertile and/or their fry have a very high mortality rate; and thirdly, they're known to be more aggressive than the average apisto, so bonding to breed may pose a problem.

i haven't seen this hybrid for ages though and thought they had disappeared from the hobby. guess someone out there is still continuing the strain

Early literature about this specimen mentioned it is a cross between Ap. combrae & Ap. resticulosa. Yes, it is a product of Singapore's "Ingenuity".
