Hey Nick, The female you referring to. Is it the fish on the left in the first picture? If yes Then i don't think it is a agassizii female. Looks more like a tri male.
Hi Guys
Need your help again with female wild apistogramma.
I got a 'pair' of wild apistogramma agassizii recently from NKS.
It was supposed to be an all male tank, but I noticed one of them that looks like a female, so I got a pair.
Is it possible for a female to look almost as good as a male?
I have not been able to get a good body shot of her, she is really shy.
Here are some bits and pieces of her
Here's the male

Pardon the trifasciata pair, they are really pissed with the intruder
Yes the fishes on the left is a trifasciata male and female respectively.
The subject is hiding in the cave.
If its the one under the driftwood in pic 1 and 2, and in the last pic, it looks like a male agassizii to me.
Yes, in picture 1, 2 and 3. Compared to all the other males in the tank, the dorsal does not extend to the tail. Also the spot on the lateral line is quite obvious. The tail fin is also not tapered as compared to the male in picture 4.

it looks very much a male to me. could be subdominant and thus not as well developed as the alpha male

I have never seen a female that looks remotely like this. I am quite sure it is a male.
thanks for the input.![]()

My HighLand Terrarium, planting carnivorous plants and orchids
It is a confirmed male.
Nick
I have a female not wild caught, but nice red and orange colors variant. The male did nto make it in my office tank. Let me know if you want to adopt her.
Cheers
