You can get Juwel's tanks at Sam's Pet & Aquarium - they have a few branches. I bought my Rio 300 (4ft) at their HQ at Marine Parade Central. In my opinion, the tanks are expensive, but you get what you pay for - high quality, well-built and clear glass. Other than that, I don't quite like the internal filter (although I liked the idea initially that everything is there already), the heater (no use for it) and the lights set (definitely need to add more lights if you are planning to do heavy planting).

Oh - one more thing - the warranty. My tank had a leak (till today, I do not know where and why) on its eleventh month, and they replaced it with a brand new one with no questions asked. Even double checked on the cabinets to see if it was soaked and will replace it if it was soaked.

In all, for the price you pay - you get the tank, filter, light set, heater, cabinet and flap covers (which are neat and nice).

    Hi BNG....

thanks for the insight. I bet you must have spent like more than $1k for the 4 footer? I'm looking at 3footer..4 feet too big for my tiny house.

Does the internal works well for you? Hows your tank planted? Heavy planted? Then how did you add the extra lights? DIY-ed?

Sorry that I asked too much bro...

I spent around $1.2K for the complete set. Take a look here (http://www.juwel-aquarium.de/en/index.htm) before going to the HQ at Marine Parade Central. Ask the assistants to bring you to the second level where they keep the Juwel tanks for viewing. They do have sales every now and then on the tanks. I think they do have 3ft.

The internal filter does work, but it's an eyesore for me. I planted some tall plants to block it from view.

My tank would be considered moderately planted. Additional equipment added is a CO2 set with internal pump head and reactor. And the new 4 ft 4x65W PL set which I bought recently and mounted over the tank. Since I had the original look for the last 3 years, I took away the Juwel light set (2x 38W T and flaps. Anyone interested in getting this?

The new sets now come with T5 HO light sets, but you do need to get another set of the lighting and new flaps cover for planting. If you do that, the set would look very nice. The additional light set and flap covers would probably costs another $300. Worth it if you considering to retain the original look.

As a summary, it is a good set to start the hobby with (tank with cover flaps, cabinet, lights set and filter) and is very pleasing to the eye as it is very well-built. I went for it 3 years ago and added equipment as I went along.

With covered flaps, did your water temp rise than normal room temp?

Temperature of my tank hovers around 28 to 29C when the flaps are on. I did put a fan on the top and had cut away a small portion of the flap for it.

I don't think I have encountered the tank's temperature being higher than the room temperature. I supposed the size of the tank keeps it stable.

Now, without the flaps - the temperature is still 28 to 29C.

I'd bet with that price you could get a nice custom made tank and you can choose your own dimension, lights and filters.

I have the Juwel Rio 180 which cost me £180 (uk) Can't believe its so expensive for you over there.

I found that the light unit was crap on mine. In the first two years i had it i had to have the entire light unit replaced 5 times! Repeatedly kept dieing on me. Would turn off and that was it, never ever turn on again. So i invested in a £300 light set.

Internal filter was good at first. Although i found it can get in the way of scaping your tank at times. I know people who have removed it by using guitar strings and a lube of some sort. Hard to do but worthwhile if you don't want the filter. Be carefull not to overfill the filter with filter media, i found certain pads within the Juwel filter range actually block the flow of water entirely.

Heater is plentifull. I actually have to use mine, due to colder conditions here in the UK, but its ample.

Service Juwel provide as bng says is second to none. Each time i had to have my lights replaced they took it no questions asked. Quality service and i'd definately buy another tank from them! You do pay the for premium but the customer service comes highly recommended. Although i've had a few hiccups over the years they keep me happy and always help me out.

I am currently using PL. The Juwel light set is FL and is still working. No repairs done.

The Rio300 I bought is approx. 400 quid or 1.2K singapore dollars. It came all the way from Germany and sold by one agent, hence the price.

One more thing about the blue filter pads - I rinse them every couple of months (not all at the same time). It's still keeps it shape after 3 years, and I change the white filter pad every 2 weeks - it's expensive - around S$1 per piece.

After 3 years, I think the pump is due for a new one - it's slowing down. I might just remove the filter and get an external filter. More space to plant and possibly put the CO2 reactor inline and of course, get a chiller. If I can just convince my wife that the chiller would make the plants healthier, which would then turn out nicer and we would then be happier by looking at the plants - which would then make our life a happier one. Chiller = happier family life.

Found this site for the removal of the filter:

Ha! I like how that article is done in a quirky way from someones experience. I must admit when i first got my Juwel i lost all my Japonica shrimp down it, had to hoist them out with a ladle after teasing them to the surface. Nightmare! Haha.

I find with my filter pads, i keep the blue ones, green one (i think) and black ones. Theres a little white one (prefilter ontop?) which i sometimes keep. There was also one thin, but extremely dense either blue/green pad which used to just block water instead of filter it. So i removed this.

I replaced my standard powerhead with another one after the anniversary of my tanks second year, just as a precaution. Nothing worse than finding it has stopped and having to make a trip to a LFS to get a replacement.

Try cleaning your filter media out a little in tank water, may increase flow rate. I found actually taking apart all the little bits of the powerhead and cleaning them helps too. You'd be surprised actually how much of it can be accessed. You can get right into the unit itself, to where the propeller spins within its space to pump water. Taking it all out cleaning it, and ridding algae from the inside of it helped greatly with the flow rate of my pump. There a great little unit and apparently they can last a few years, after cleaning mine out i guess i realised actually how true this is.

    Hi,

I have a Trigon 350 from Sam also, price then was about $1600.
below is what I like about Juwel tank.

    Pro
Good clear glass-looks a little thin though
Good individual reflector than increase the efficiency of the 90W light, that is come with the tank
    Good workmanship to the tank

    Con
Internal filter-difficult to maintain as I have to stretch 3ft to reach the filter
Tank stand-need to keep dry so to prevent damage

I guess the new tank come with a high output T5, if I am not wrong.
this will increase the previous 90W to the current 138W...

My tank is now 2years old, all stand and tank are in good condition...

    Regards...

hhhmmm....the price is an overki77 but its what we're paying for.

With one-to-one exchange policy during warranty period will put customers at ease...

but the price is choking me.....
Are the T5 good enough for planted tanks? how many tubes?

With 90W, I am able to glow tonina SP. I guess the reflectors do help a lot.
I do not know if the new tank comes with T5, as per website mentioned.
    Trigon 350 now have 2x45W, and 2X24W...

    Regards...

Juwel have their own branded sizes of T5 lights. They are good enough a company to recognise the importance/gain of these new T5 lights. Other companies are also taking notice of Juwel's size range and are too manufacturing lights to fit them too.

    Just thought i'd add.

    Guys,

Sorry to hijack this thread... But I do have a spare set of the original internal filter and heater for sale. In very mint condition. Used on my Rio 180 before.
    Anyone keen?

    Cheers
