    Name: Apistogramma sp. "Black-chin/Schwarzkinn"
    Family: Dwarf Cichlid
    Distribution: Lower Rio Nanay
Minimum Tank Size: At least a 1ft tank for a pair.
    Temperament: Semi-aggressive.
Diet: Accepts a wide range of staple and live food.

Sexual Dimorphism: Male develops a lyrate caudal fin. Female exhibit a rounded or at most, slightly truncate caudal fin. The soft rayed section of the dorsal fin in matured males are enlarged whereas those of the females are usually rounded and never enlarged. Ventral fins of the females are short and the black markings cover half or full on the fins. Males exhibit black to bluish markings on the ventral fins and they rarely cover more then 1/3 the fins.

Breeding: pH from 5.5 to 6.5 and frequent water changes can incite them to spawn. Water temperature from 24-29 degrees. Prefer to spawn in enclose areas. Ceramic caves, caves made by means of driftwoods or rocks are preferred. Both parents will tend to their young when in a large community tank.

Remarks: Apistogramma sp. "Black-chin/Schwarzkinn" is often mistakenly labeled and sold as Apistogramma juruensis . The easiest way to differentiate the 2 species are firstly by the colour of their lips and the black stripe on their chin. Apistogramma sp. "Black-chin/Schwarzkinn" have a yellow lip and the a "T" shape black stripe on their chin while Apistogramma juruensis have blue lips and the black stripe on their chin is usually very short or small without the "T" shape.

Similar to the commercially bred form, yellow morphs with the black pattern on the ventral fins have also been found to exist in the wild. Koslowski documented one of the wild specimen (A199) with the black pattern ventral fins.

Nice fare without mirror. Pic 1 and 2 is the same fish? Love the colours on the fins when it catch light the right way. I suppose this is a young fish and the fins will grow more?

I am a bit lost on the "T" black chin. You mean the black line running down from the lips?

The first 2 pictures are the same specie but different colour morphs. And yes they are just sub-adults.

Actually the first 2 pictures are taken with them not flaring but in their neutral mood. When they flare, their fins will become more red rather then blue as shown in the last picture.

Yes, how it got its name as the "Black-chin" was that black line running down the lower lip. And the letter "T" was used to differentiate the "Black-chin" from the Juruensis which too have the black line but seldom forming a letter "T" at the lower lip.
