Just saw this fish (looks like a cichlid)
    at pet safari today.

It has blue streaks on its face and has a blue irridiscent body and orangey fins. It's about 3" long and has grabbed the terroritory on the left side of the tank.

Just wondering if it is a cichlid at all, if yes, what's the name?
    It's a really beautiful fish

    Thanks

Whats a Lake Malawi butterfly , david ?
You got the latin name ?

Vic , the fish you mentioned , what exactly do you mean by streaks ?
Traces of blue on the face ? Or the whole face is a bright blue , or stripes or spotted etc ?
If the shape looks like a cichlid , what kind ? Old world or new world ?

Hard to go by your description , maybe can describe further ?

Well, the streaks looks like the pattern on snakeskin discus, except it's blue.
I'm not too sure what kind of cichlid it is. I'm a super beginner at cichlids, but it's not a dwarf cichlid.

It even has a slight head hump at 3"!

"Well, the streaks looks like the pattern on snakeskin discus, except it's blue"

Emm...one from the acara family perhaps ?

From my description, David says it might be the black acara.
From the pictures on the net, it looks like the blue acara except that that fish has orange fins and a slight head hump

HHmmm...the fish in question looks similar to Aulonocara Jacobfreibergi.
Either the picture on http://malawicichlids.com not too good or the specimen in pet safari is an extremely good one.

Anyhow, any idea where to purchase such fishes?

Didnt know the Aulonocara Jacobfreibergi were called butterflies. Maybe thats a trade name I am not yet aware of.
To my knowledge , they are just known as african peacocks in most shops.

But then again the description that Vic you gave , doesnt really describe the fish , snakeskin pattern on the face ? Most malawis dont have "pattern-ed" colorations on the face , just color/s.

Could be an acara , aiya just go outside the shop and take picture...haha at least you arent INSIDE the shop where the No Photography thing applies

Anyway putting that fish aside , if you are planning to get malawi peacocks , you can try Rainbow ( prices you should know la... ), and the other 2 shops at Serangoon North OTHER than petmart , Tropical Fish farm at Pasir Ris FFs , Cichlid supplies FF at Jalan Lekar .

Dont tell me it is a "green terror" or the Gold Saum variety to be specific. Aequedens Rivulatus..yes from the acara group too.

orangy fins (at the fin border)
    wriggle patterns on the face..
    slight hump...
blue irridiscent body .. (it is a light turquoise on green terror)

    i used to have one..
    from my gallery :

    green terror male

I've managed to take a look at a african peacock at an LFS today. The one in Pet Safari is not it.

The 12' tank is way deep inside Pet Safari, definitely cannot take picture

    LSZ,
The coloration of the fins look exactly like your green terror, but the body shape is way nicer and with a slight head hump.

OH NO! Don't tell me it's another hybrid!!!!![]

Anyhow, thank for all the help. BTW, where to buy this green terror that LSZ has? thx

    haha
ok if you want to keep green terror,
need some space for them to grow...they are abt 8-10" fish.

and if you want to mix, i think at least 4 ft tank will be good.
Best cichlid tankmates are firemouths, oscars, C.synspilum.
other fish will be silver dollars as the most ideal.

i think young green terrors are commonly available.

larger ones do come in occasionally but the price is not justifiable.
if you want a male, from the young batch, choose the one which is the biggest and has a head large in proportion to the body. Finnage is just a little longer(can be hard to tell) . Generally, females are more rounded and the head is smaller and smoother in proportion.

very hard to describe...quite "instinct" kind of thing.

Vic , the fish you saw is just one lone one in the planted tank right ?
If so that is definitely not the Malawi butterfly and I dont think it is a GT or acara either.

Looks a bit like a badis badis badis.

badis badis? I tot that is a tiny fish? That fish in the tank is 3"!

So how? isn't that fish beautiful?

Frankly i dont know what it is also , looks a bit like a gourami also..was staying at the far corner of the tank and i couldnt have a close look at it.

But i am certain it isnt a GT or a Peacock.

Flipping thru a fish encloypedia , dont have anything that resembles it other than a bluish variant of the badis badis.

I'm calling this fish the stumper fish...
I don't think it's a gouraumi. Fins don't look like it and also it doesn't have the long feeler ventrals that gouraumis have. Body shape also looks more like an american cichlid
