    Hi,

I got a hanging filter for my tank and there are 2 medias inside. How long do I need to clean the medias and how to clean them?
Do I need to change them after some time?

    Thanks.

you should always only rinse your media with tank water. tap water contains chlorine that will kill all the beneficial bacteria residing in your media.

you should change media when its too clogged up to perform effective filtration and when it is in bad shape.

    Hi,

How do I know if the media is clogged up etc? How do I check?
Where can I get the media? from the LFS or need to get from the supplier of the filter?

    Thanks.

for me if i can't see the pores (in the case of sponges), i'll give them a good rinse with tank water which i just drained from water change.

as for filter wool if they start to look gooey and brown i'll throw away some of them and mix a small portion (which i will rinse first with tank water) with the new filter wool to seed BB on the new wool.

as for media maybe you can go for sponge or jap mat as the first layer for filtering the big bits/particles, and for BB cultivation i'll go for small ceramic rings or more premium ones like Eheim Substrat Pro if budget allows. should be able to get at LFS
