    Hi guys,

I got Rainbow brand frozen blood worms for feed this little fellow.
I have been feeding this since last week but this poor fellow seems to be affraid of all the other fishes and never attempts to take a bite.

During the feeding session he succeeds to get hardly 2-3 worms

Is this their general behaviour ?

Dwarf puffers are very inquisitive creatures. They are known to observe the surroundings before making any moves.

Your other fishes are too fast and aggresive during feeding time. Your puffer, being slower, is just wary of them. Observe and ensure your puffer does not look too thin or emaciated.

Dwarf puffers do best in a species only tank.

    Thanks quixotic for the views.
My puffer is not looking very bad either. during feeding, the few worms that he gets makes his stomatch bulge out. so i guess more also will not be of any use to him.

I will definitely keep a watch on this guy

Ramshorn snail is definitely not a problem for the puffer, not sure about nerite snails. Regardless, I don't think any snail is safe with the puffer. Even if the snail is considerably larger, doesn't mean the puffer cannot take bites at it, to the extend of harassing the snail to its death.

That said, it may also depend largely on the personality of the puffer. If you feed it enough each day, then maybe, just maybe, they will ignore the snail.

Dwarf puffer feed on brine shrimp? I have been feeding my fishes BBS but my puffer always look disappointed while the others are feasting. Tried live tubifex worms, puffer loves it, but keeping a constant supply is a hassle.

Bro Jacian, may I know where to get feeder snails? How do I ask for them in LFS?

I have not see C328 selling the feeder snails recently, not sure if they are still available. I am now feeding my puffer frozen blood worm and he loves it. He also loves the brine shrimp too. Occasionally I will throw in some snails from my planted tank.

yup, you can try frozen bloodworm, my dwarf puffer loves it. should be less of a hassle for you as compared to tubiflex worms.

I went down to C328 today and inquired about feeder snails. Seems like they do sell, but limited quantity each time as Auntie said they die and smell very fast in the plastic bag. And I missed the last packet for the day when I reached there at 1 plus pm!!

Got tubifex worms instead and puffer was happy and bloated for the day. Saw him balloon up and shrink back, is he puking (nothing comes out of its mouth)?

My puffer does not eat BBS. Maybe I'll try adult brine shrimp one day when I lay my hands on a packet.

i saw feeder snails on sale last saturday at C328.

they're the common pesky snails which comes with plants. those multiply really fast, maybe you should start breeding them, for a constant/free supply.

how about ghost shrimps? $2/pack should last you for some time?

My DP never touch my shrimps. I may be lucky. Snails if grow too big, they also tend to ignore, rather wait for them to lay eggs and hatch baby snails. Think they also prefer a variety of food, so tubifex or frozen blood worms are good once in a while even though there are already snails. To get them to puff: I once saw mine ate too much tubifex, it puffed for 1-2 secs as if it wanted to vomit. Haha... Most amusing sight. Other than that, quite hard to induce them to puff, even though my friend tried very hard to disturb it out of water. But once we tried on another puffer at LFS, it puffed immediately when netted out of water, so I guess it all depends on the "charactor" of the individual puffer. And that is what makes them unique and interesting!!!

I used to keep green spotted puffers, from what I know puffers should not be kept in a community tank because they will usually nip other fishes with long fins and tails. Also, I've read in some fish-keeping magazines that puffers need to have snails in their diets. The reason is because they need to trim their 'beak/teeth" which will grow too long after a while, causing them trouble when eating. Maybe you could ask any bro/sis within the forum if they have any pest snails to give away? That could help

Based on my personal experience of keeping them for several years, and experience of other dwarf puffer keepers from http://www.dwarfpuffers.com, it is the general consensus that dwarf puffers (Carinotetraodon travancoricus and C. imitator) do not need snails to file (wear down) their teeth. Dwarf puffers don't seem to suffer from overgrown teeth, unlike other puffers. But there's no harm feeding them snails, they simply love them.

Planning to feed my dwarf puffer only FBW. Maybe an occasional treat of snails. Hope it goes well.

It has been 2 months since I introduce half a packet of feeder snails to my 2 footer tank. At 1st, it overwhelmed the tank with snails, but as time goes by, the amount of snails dropped to a steady supply, which does not become and eyesore. I realised snails are able to clean up algae at some areas where shrimps and fishes could not, and as long as their number do not multiply to such an extend that they become an eyesore, they are interesting to watch and beneficial to have. So with a constant supply of snails for my dwarf puffer, it eased my mind off having to specifically feed it, only occasionally giving it a treat of other live food when I feed my fish. So for my case, is opposite of bro razornova's puffer's diet of mainly FBW and occasional snail.

Bought a small packet of feeder snails from Polyart today. Rinsed them in water and threw all of them into my tank. Puffers didn't seem really keen on them, only taking small nibbles and moving on.

For some reason some of the snails are trying to climb out of my tank?

How big is your tank? Half a packet of feeder snails over-crowded my 2 feet tank... Took quite a while for the number to drop to a level where they do not look too disgusting. It is also dangerous to add so many snails to your tank all at once, if your initial bio-load is already quite high.

Do not worry about your puffer. You will see that for weeks, it's tummy will be round and full.
