i'm currently using a light-green and silver cylinder chich i bought from petmart...
i don't know exactly how many liters it is but comparing its size to my other smaller co2 cylinder, the common dark green one... it should last more than 2 months right? the common green one is reputed to last about 6 months on 1 bps...

anyway i'm using the slightly bigger light-green silver tank to pump co2 into 2 of my 2 feet tanks in my room...
i got my split connector thingy to split the co2 to supply 2 tanks done at nature...
i'm running the co2 at 0.5 bps for one tank and 1-1.5 bps per second...
after 2 weeks of running the system on a full tank, 1000psi i think... my co2 tank is HALF EMPTY!!!
    like what the hell!?
i estimate the coz tank to run out in less than 3 weeks from now! meaning that i'll have to top up my co2 once every 5 weeks? this is with running with a solenoid too...

    please advise guys!?

really need all your help here...

u should test the tubing to look for any leaks, if u suspect

ryan...if your tube is typically those that are used for air pump, you need to change it. It is also a good time to test your regulator and any other joint areas for week spot.....use a foamy soap solution...use the soap foam and not the water....if there is any leaks, it will be bubbling....areas of leak is usually the 2 gadget joining into the regulator.

oooh i forgot...ryan, when applying the soapy foam, use a sponge and just dab it around the areas you want to test.....

    Hi Ryan,

My CO2 last 6 to 9 months, 2bps, 24 hrs. I am not sure of the gas tank size, it is a bigger one, silver and black, that shop often sell at $110-120.

Now, I used a solenoid with 2.5-3 bps, may be it will last longer.

One of the reason for short life is the tank is not fully refilled. I had one experience with it where the refiller refills using a bigger gas tank and force fed my tank. I knew it is under-fill when I picked it up as it is light. The tank end up lasting only 4 months.

    Have fun.

FC brought up a very good point about refilling techniques, sometimes, refill isnt done correctly, therefore always result in not filling it full... I experience this at one of my regular refill stop, using a big cylinder, they force fed and most of the time, only last a fraction of the usual refill I get else where... just topup my tank yesterday at bioplast again, so far, they do a better job... I guess before refilling, they have to release the remaining gas, obtain the same pressure as their refilling cylinder and the correct temperature.

    hi ryan,
i used to have the green silver aluminuim cylinder bought from petmart. it depleted very fast the first time too. according to ben, the new cylinder is not fully topup to reduce the cost of shipping from taiwan.

a properly filled tank should contain both liquid and gaseous co2. co2 will remain in liquid state under pressurisation. if you use release some co2, the pressure of gaseous co2 will be slightly reduced resluting in some of the liquid co2 becoming gaseous co2. that is why the tank pressure gauge does not move until the tank is about to empty.

when all the liquid co2 has changed into gaseous co2, the tank pressure gauge will start to move as there isn't any liquid co2 to take the place of used gaseous co2.

so the tank pressure gauge will not tell you if the tank is fully filled. think the only way is to weigh the tank. don't know if the tank show any 'empty weight' of 'gross weight' figures. 'empty weight' refer to empty tank weight while 'gross weight' refers to weight of cylinder + weight of both liquid and gaseous co2.

as for tank not fully filled due to shipping cost, this will be true if all tanks are air freighted from taiwan. if shipment comes by sea, it makes no difference to shipping cost. however, it could be partially filled as part of the manufacturing process to check tanks for possible leakage.

iirc the phase diagram of co2 shows a liquid/gas transition at ard 900 psi
if you get a pressure reading of >1k psi it's safe to assume you got the bang for your buck when topping up []

i bought the tank quite a while ago...
its the top ups that depletes very fast...
can u imagine having to top up your cylinder every 5 weeks!?
sheesh i might as well do diy co2!
i think its a problem with petmarts topping up...

if you suspect its due to the LFS top up, try a different one. or go to soxal.

I think petmart doesn't do tank to tank top up right? If I remember correctly, they use the same guy which C328 uses, and that uses a compressor to top-up. Shouldn't be problematic unless the guy topping up is cheating.

It is important who tops up the CO2 can for you... When I got my can, I brought it in to Soon Heng 88. They didn't do the top up themselves; the whole thing was passed to another vendor. When I went back to collect a few days later, the boss told me that the fillers claimed my can was faulty and can't be filled. Not convinced, I brought the tank to the Bioplast guys (after hearing positive feedback from fellow AQ'ers). That was about 5 months ago and my tank is still dispensing CO2 happily (at about 2bps).

So, if it is not too inconvenient, I'd suggest paying the Bioplast guys a visit (very friendly people).

    ryan,
petmart's co2 refills are ok. my subsequent refills there lasted more than 6 months. there might be a leak some where. apply soap water on the joints to check for leak. the last time i suspected a leak, i submerged the whole set in a pail of water to check. there was no leak but the pressure gauge got half filled with water. got to slowly shake the water out after that. but it sure is a faster way to check.

    Hi

Maybe you should put those white tape commonly used for piping before puting in the solenoid valve.

hmmmz... putting the whole set into a pail of water?
but won't my solenoid thing spoil?
