Strange phenomenon Most countries have more and more entries each year.

But planted tank awareness is certainly increasing here.

    Strange phenomenon indeed.

Think is because the mentality of I submit, I must win? If we look at all the submissions, only the top 300s are really good. And the scapes I see on AQ, some can squeeze into the top 300s.

Hopefully, next year, more Singaporeans will forget about the face thing and don't be concern whether my tank is in the same league or not. There is no league! It is just a single league. No relegations.

No submission, no improvement. What do you judge your own tanks with? With people's comments on AQ? Very often, we get is "Bro, nice scape. Where you got your plants ar?" Period.

Submit your tanks, and then see if it is indeed a nice scape in the eyes of the judges. AQ is a perfect forum for us to discuss in details on how to improve on our scapes. with all the enthusiasts here. Bring down the barrier of shyness.

Now we have another one year to ADA 2009. Let's cheong ar!

Do also look out for some of the programs we are currently planning for in the later part of the year. It will be a great opportunity to discuss about aquascaping!

Good luck to the ranks for the 16 brave souls who submitted!

Maybe we can have an AQ Aquatic Plants Layout Contest 2009 next year, Around one or two months before the ADA competition. This will promote more interest and at the same time improve on our own standard.

After that, the judging panel will select those potential tanks and help them improve on the various scaping aspect.

Finally, we can also form up an AQ Aquascape Photographer Team to help take better pictures for those potential tank, since not every good aquascaper is a good photographer....

It will be a great idea. Outing or even some course provided by some AQ member teaching people how to do correct planting which i think will benifit many.

There should be AGA 2008 coming soon right? Though most of the photo send would be the same as ADA IAPLC 2008, especially the winner. Make it less interesting.

Haha, I think it would be a good thing to have AQ competition. yea Jervis is a good contender. Hehe, I am sure all his investment and time and effort will pay off. This being said, I think this is why there is less and less of us sending in pictures. We do not have to send it a picture to win. We send in a picture to contribute to the whole community, to share something, and to feel proud of what we have done in our own space. The whole world get to see it.

By sharing pictures, knowledge and equipments used, etc, I am sure others will benefit. There is a very steep learning curve in aquascaping (or plant keeping - whatever you are in), and you only learn through mistakes, comments and suggestions.

Looking at Jervis tanks and other tanks here, my hands are itchy to try something out. Maybe I will soon. I wanna rob a bank!

I am sure there will be plenty of sponsors for a local event. (ADA merchants, raise hands!).

    Keep trying!

    Cheers, Christophe

Agree with ADA SG and Merviso. It's still puzzling When I visit LFS, it is always jam packed with people and we have only 16 entries? Firstly, don't be too concern about winning or losing. All are winners as you will have your tank pictures will be published in the ADA result book, and nothing beats seeing your tank pictures with the world entries. If you ask me, ADA contest is a world event most planted tank hobbyists would certainly dream to win top prizes.

Yes! More aquatic plant layout workshops here. This will promote and advance awareness of planted tank in Singapore. AQ competition will certainly bring the interest to the next level. But especially for folks like Jervis, please don't limit entries to one per head

Merviso's idea on AQ photography team to assist keen ADA participants is a good one. Benny and Valice have been actively helping members but i think most of the members are too shy to ask for help.

Think about this :- Singapore is the largest exporter in the world of ornamental fish and aquatic plants (?). Hence, we certainly deserve to have more entries and squeeze in more top prizes for the contest.

    Good idea
A AQ promotion before ADA would do good to identify potential tanks to go for ADA.

But I'm also surprised that out of the 16 entries, 14 are from AQ. This goes to say that awarness of ADA 08 seems limited to forums only.
There maybe aquascapers out there but some do not patronized forums for updates.

Not exactly a surprise, right? I mean you do not see ADA competition poster put up at LFS, right?

    Ya true.

On another note, we've Oriental Aquarium which I believed is one of the largest aquatic plant farm, so getting preferred aquatic plants is not an issue.

Members of planted tank forums will be more inclined to feel a sense of belonging and also, there are encouragement and suggestions for improvement of their tanks. With that, I believe, it will be more or less a source of motivation for them to participate in the contest.

To add to leeruisheng's comment about aquatic plants supply, I have read about folks in some countries who have limited access to aquatic plants and trying hard to beg, smuggle or what-have-they to get a hand of some common plants which our members here giving out FOC like weeds. Even in their situations, they would manage to whip up a planted tank to join the contest.

Here, we are also spoilt for choice of most brands of aquatic equipments and setting up a tank is a breeze here.

Sometime people just get too obsessed with having different exotic plants or owning a branded equipment rather than focusing on the basics of a planted tank.
