    The inhabitants might get electricuted...
And the MCB in your house will definitely trip... causing probably the entire house without power, and surely a black faced wife (if your knots are tied)

Hi dude...nope no worries...nothing will happen maybe just tripping occurs at the DISTRIBUTION BOARD and no your tank won't explode...maybe a mild
    shock for the fishys .

But when you try to retrieve the fan ,do switch off the main power source
WATER IS A CONDUCTOR OF ELECTRICITY!!!!...as always gentlemen play it safe when it comes to electricity and electrical products.

You guys should practice better safety precautions... lucky those fans are usually very low powered... don't try that with light fixture

if it is an ac fan, being low powered does not reduce the risk of electric shock.

as a safety precaution, always switch off electrical stuff in your tank before dipping your hand in.

Most aquarium fans sold in lfs are DC fans. It comes with an adapter (usually the big plug head). Being a plug n play, that's why its considered AC to some folks. Unless the adapter is built into the fan (i've never seen such a stupidly dangerous design for an aquarium fan before) and the whole damned thing falls in, there's no worries at all. 12V won't be enough to push any significant current through your skin.

In fact, exposed wiring from submersed pumps are more of a hazard. I used to have 1 which could send a tingling feeling to my finger when i touch the water and it lights up the test pen quite brightly. Even so, my fishes were living relatively healthily in that tank.

The MCB will trip if there is a over-current.
Useless the positive terminals and negative terminal are far part (and the fish in between), the fishes will not get fried. The current will just pass through the water from the positive to the negative. You may get some corrosion at the exposed wiring joints, and whatever gases that is generated by the electrolysis action..
