    Hi bros out there..
Am new to fish keeping. Was trying to feed my fishes (tetras, rams, corys) with live food. Thought live food would be better for my fishes. Fed tubifex worms quite frequently to my fishes. But sources said that worms may carry bacteria. Is it that bad? Have a few loses, but don't know is it due to tubifex worms.

Just saw some packets of sea monkeys in LFS and thought of switching to sea monkey as live food. Wonder how am I going to feed them to my fishes? The monkeys are suspended in the water and was told it is salt water.

And how long will this packet ($3) ones stay alive? Seems too much for even 2 days feed. Or in other words, how to keep them alive?

    Enlightenment appreciated. Thanks

The sea monkeys are actually brine. You would need to drain the water before introducing it to the tank. What I do is to net them, rinse it over running water before introduction.

If you wanna keep them alive, transfer them into a shallow tank and aerate it. But not worth it as their lifespan is also kindda short but enough maybe another day or 2.

You can keep the leftovers in the fridge. Put them in a container with the brine solution that comes with it and store it in the fridge. They will go into hibernation, (they will wake up when the temperature rises) when ready to feed, just scoop them and into the tank.

    Thanks alot.
Hibernation. meaning to say that I have to wait for a while after the sea monkeys are awake before feeding?

what about tubifex? Are they really not recommended at all? wanted to give them a variety of food. cannot seems to find any bloodworms anywhere.

My rams seems to like it alot and are now ready to mate with live food. the 2 males that I've got are fighting each other and chasing the only female around. Wonder if the fight will be lethal.

I dump them in, salt water and all in my 3ft tank without any adverse effects. Depending on how big your tank is and if you do water change at least once in 2 weeks will be no problem. What I do is vary the food between brine shrimp, Baby brine shrimp, daphnia and tubifex worms. When I had tetra size fish or larger, one bag was enough to feed all of them so what I do is feed them very little or not at all the day before.

Now I'm cycling a new 3 ft tank and the current fish I have are all mico-sized so even tubifex and adult brine shrimp are too big for them. My temporary holding tank is only 1ft so it's easily polluted by the water so I have to do subtle water changes, not too much just to keep them calm.

Live bloodworms have been unavailable for more than a year now because the AVA has stopped their import for some reason. A pity, cause my fish loved them but have to stick to frozen ones now.

To feed live feed, best to let the brine shrimp wake up first, then see them wiggling in the water before get eaten

they smell only when they die and start to rot. cover the container properly and it should be fine. yes tubi smells terribly when they die, a bit troublesome, have to change water very often.

Hey zyblack, don't add hot water lah, you end up with brine shrimp soup

it is sold in packets. tiny creatures. has a feature that stick out like an arm (like monkeys) and swim randomly in the water. Actually looks more like a sea praying mantis... do a google / yahoo search. should have some pics of it.
