FLORENCE, capital of the region of Tuscany, has a population of around half a million inhabitants, spreads on the banks of the Arno, between the Adriatic and the Tyrrhenian seas, almost in the middle of the Italian peninsula. It is a city which bustles with industry and craft, commerce and culture, art and science.

raboras, dwarf gouramis and barbs(not tiger though).
im thinking of an assortment of tiny fishes.. like neon tetras cardinal tetras is that adviseable? or shld i just keep one kind?

Whats your tank size?
2.5ft.. 75 X 38 X 40cm
shoaling fish should be about 6 each type, so for a 2.5footer, not many types to put in...
and for cardinals, 10 will be nicer than 6.![]()
oh, i find that cherry barbs can be very nice in a planted tank, very diff from what you see in the lfs.

of course you could go for massive numbers of a single species like Gans cardinal tank...

wats the recommended number of fishes i can have??

Cardinal or Rummy nose are my favorites. Choose either one and put a whole bunch inside. It's very nice to see them shoaling. If you have just these fishes, 30 would be ok.

Sherwin, how do you make your cardinal shoal? I have about 100 pcs and I also have big rams. The damn thing is that the cardinal are not shoaling at all. Rummynose shoal well and they are constantly on the run, left.. right... left... right.... But those cardinals simply lacks energy.
BTW, they are not old fish.

mine don't shoal much too, have about 30-40 in my 70L tank. I think when they are too comfortable they don't bother to shoal (which is a defense tactic).

Put something scary in.... I'm sure they'll shoal.I have 90+ cardinals in my tank and they shoal from time to time... dunno what turns them on... sometimes they just go crazy and go in every direction, but 70% of the time they shoal.[

Maybe it got something to do with the tank size. Could it be that they don't have much room to shoal? Juz a guess......

Hmm, interesting thought, seems like cardinals tend to shoal more when there is lots of space and less places to hide. For example, I notice that Chan's outside tank on the left, which is basically rocks and some small plants, the cardinals are always shoaling.

perhaps? my 100+ cardinal n 30+rummynose also seldom shoal. they seemed to be always scattered around. can be quite messy at time to look at. ???[]

I agree with eggz, my cardinals never shoal until I introduced some giants (discus) today.
in very tempted to add cardinal, neon, rummynose.. and somemore other types of tiny fishes..
wats a min. number for a shoal?

It's quite hard to tell you how many to put in. It also depends on the tank planting condition and space avalability. Maybe you can try adding them bit by bit so to not shock the nitrogen cycle. Don't put in too many fish, else you'll see them dropping like flies.
i'd probably go for:
10 cardinals
10 rummynose
8 white cloud mountain minnows (wait till you see their real colours in a planted tank!)
2 otos
total 30... [:]
