Yes you are right. Was considering for thick substrate for large plants. Thanks for reminding that it is difficult to reach the bottom during planting, a good pointer though.

I just got a magnetic cleaner over the weekend. The magnet (it floats too!) is bloody strong. I managed to scrape off even those spot algae. Cool...----------------

Deeper can accomodate more lights. Higher will require even more lights. This being the case, I think you should consider more depth than height. I didn't and I regret.
I have dwarf cichlids in my tanks! Do you?
Just to add on, again the "bigger is better" rule applies. Besides the same advantages listed earlier between 3 and 4 ft tanks,----------------

More width gives you the ability to give your tank more depth in the way you aquascape
More Height allows your plants to grow taller (and thus require pruning less often).
One thing worth considering with regards to height and width is your lighting solution... can it fit in the dimensions? and will it be effective.

a 2' depth should be sufficient. just measure the length of your arm. even if you get a tank whose depth is same as the length of your arm, you will not be able to reach the opposite bottom. you will need a stool or something when you setup or maintain your tank.
well, you are buying the tank and there are loads of factors for you to 'kill your brain cells'. consider what types of plants you want to keep and this may help you to decide the tank dimensions.

Sorry to drift the topic but I did that just to answer someone mentioning deep tank maintenance problem.
Yes, an extra strong magnetic cleaner (take the bigger one will save you more time) and filter floss (more effective than one could imagine). And buff the glass once a week will make the shine easier and in lesser time.
