could it be the water have not been changed for a long time?
Yelo fishians. Currently, i've two 1ft cube planted tanks. The water for one of my tank actually smells. Hmm...like rotten plants. My plants are doing ok except for 1 which is like turning slightly brown. Could the plant be the source of smell? Anyway, my water looks clear ; not cloudy at all. Any fellow fishians out here have suffered the same sympton as me before? Any good advice?

I did a water change 3 days back; about 20% change
Active carbon/bamboo charcoal always helps!
Can describe the smell? I'm using carbon pads in my OHF but theres this very pungent stench due to BGA. The mosses which i took out to use h202 really ticks me off, its like cleaning rotten eggs.
Errmm...don't really know how to describe in detail but just like rotten smell. I've java ferns, java moss and swordplant in there. What is BGA and H202? I'll be doing another major check on the water tomorrow morning.
Maybe it's the food you've fed to the fish.
BGA- Blue Green Algae
H202- Hydrogen Peroxide
Rotten smell is bad news. A striving planted tank shouldn't have the smell. High ammonia and BGA (slime in blue or green colouir and really stink!)may be the cause. Dead fish, rotten plant, rotten fish food, ineffective filter and BGA brewing may be the cause. Go check all angles and use carbon if there is a need.

Thanks guys. I just did a major check on my tank earlier this morning; took out the rocks and plants. And you know what, the source is mainly the food scraps that were hidden among my big rocks and plants. I did a water change (not all of the water), siphoned off the gravel and disposed off some of my plants and java moss that have turned brown. No more smell.
it seems like alot of your plants are dying off.. which is causing the smell.. perhaps your tank conditions are not suitable for those plants?
java moss is a very easy plant to keep.. i suggest you check the plants that are rooted, pluck out one and check if the roots are rooting...
