The brown algae you mentioned are diatoms. They are all part of the cycling. My tank cycled about 1 week after the diatom bloom.
Do you have test kits? You should have ammonia, nitrate and nitrite test kits...
its a 2 feet tank...
12 kg of coral sand...
11 kg of live rocks...
eheim 2213 with angel biorings and carbon and ehfi substrat...
coral life salt...
basically threw everything in on the first day...
then 3 days later i added a clown cuz i was told that fish could speed up cycling...
it dies after 3 days...
then 2 weeks after set up i got the marc weiss coral vital and have been adding it daily...
the tank is exposed to some light in the afternoon as its in the garden but under the shade with a screen of bamboo chics that is lowered when it gets bright...
i also have 1x36watts pl 10000k and 1x36watts pl 50/50 6500k
which i stopped turning on after 4-5 days after set up cuz i was told it was not needed for cycling...
~its been almost 3 weeks now...
therez brown stuff growing ALL over the coral sand in front of my tank...
therez green stringy algae on the glass of my tank...
therez white stringy particles suspended in my tank, numbers by the thousands, they actually look like worms...
the brown stuff only seems to grow in the front of my tank, and only at the parts exposed to alittle sunlight in the afternoon...
whats this brown stuff? i was told they were diatom.
whats that actually? and will they disappear? they are growing into my coral sand! argh? are all these stuff happening normal?
is my tank ready? or in big trouble?
thank you for your time!![]()

Currently keeping many wild betta species and other anabantoids.
u do not add a clown in to cycle.. actually, LR is more than enuff.. although i do use mollies (FW) to help to cycle my tank faster.. but all in all, time is the essence here.. u need to be patient especially when setting up a marine.. it took me abt 4-6 weeks to start my tank from ground zero.

well well well...
my tank has been cycled...
ammonia 0 nitrite 0 nitrate less than 12.5mg/l
is the nitrate ok?
i added 3 kg of sand to my existing 12 kg of sand after i did a 60% water change yesterday...
is that alright?
oh and does corals and anemones and those fan/christmas tree worm inverts add to the bioload?
i want to add corals already! but i'm afraid they'll throw my tank off balance...[]

U should not do a water change in the mid of the cycling process. That wrong! Let the water stable for another week and test again all peremeters b4 add any hardy fishes in. One at the time. To add corals, try 4 to 8weeks later and not now. You tank still not fully cycle. If cycled, you would not of any diatom problems. Another things, what is you water temp., PH ?Point to notes, keep corals at 26.5 - 28oC, PH always at 8.0-8.3, ofcos, dun forget the saltness of the water level at 1.022. Others reading like NH3, NO2, PHOS ALL ZERO!
Ryan,
Too fast!!!.. like what wangz had mentioned, let the tank stablised first.. monitor the parameters again after 1 week.. btw, how long have your tank been cycled? did u put anything to cycle it? remember, no matter how much u cycle the tank, with each coral or LR or livestock, the ammonia level will surge a bit.. and if your system cannot support it, it will crash.. patience is the key to this game.
