Bee Shrimp has a Latin name

The bee shrimp (and by which follows also the CRS) has been described and given a scientific name Caridina maculata.

In a recent paper Descriptions of four new species of Caridina (Decapoda: Atyidae) from China by Liqing Wang, Xiangqiu Liang & Fan Li: Zootaxa 1726: 49-59 (200

the following four shrimps from Guangdong province were described and named. pictures are extracted from the paper.

Caridina maculata

Caridina venusta

Caridina tumida

Caridina meridionalis

I don't think so that Caridina maculata by which follows also the CRS.

Caridina maculata is alway mistaken by Chinese that it is the ancestor of CRS because it is the most beautiful wild form. In local and China they call it white head bee.

so which ones do you think the Japanese bred from? a Japanese species?

Using my bare eyes to see, none of the above. Remember years ago that I passed some F1 to you? Those are the one. The bend at tail part is different from Caridina maculata and Caridina venusta. You can see in wild form or even F1, they don't have any nice bands, maybe that's all the grading and excitement about when they were refined to have bands and white bands appear.

No wonder I see there are 2 forms of white head bee mix in a shippment, now I know that they are Caridina maculata and Caridina venusta.

The species that CRS evolved from is also from China, they are within Hong Kong, Kowloon and that may also explain you can't get them from China shrimp shipment. The wild form has never shipped to Singapore, once in a while you can get from HK street in one of the shop, and I was told that they were collected by the shop keeper, not major shrimps collectors.

interesting, we could get our good buddy in Guangzhou to go collect in Hong Kong. The four species described here are from Yingde (英德) county about 200km north of Hong Kong.

How near is Yingde from Foshan? Go there next week, maybe will make a trip there.

Returned for a second visit after the failed attempt to locate these shrimps in the wild, this time, a god send angel direct us to the streams where these shrimps are, got chance to see the biotope of Ventuta, maculata and tumida.

Also visited site for tiger shrimps and tomorrow, another tiger site at hundreds of km away.
