did you put coral chips into your sump? coral chips act as buffers and tend to maintain ph on the high side
Hi all,
I am facing problem to lower the pH value to around 6.8 for the past few days. even with pumping more than 8 bps of CO2 into the tank.
I had converted a aro design tank, size 5ft x 21/2ft x 21/2ft with 41/2ft sump tank to planted tank last week. I am using mainly lapis sand which does not help to reduce the pH level.

No matter how much Co2 I inject into the tank(Through reactor), the pH seem to hover around 7 - 7.10 range.
Is it due to large area surface, and CO2 loss when flowing back to the sump tank?? Will it help if I buy lots of peat moss to lower the pH, and will it maintain at low pH.
Anyone can advise?
Regards,
Ct

I guess it could mainly due to your hugh tank size, with the sump, it should be no less that 1200 litres of water. Although at 8bps of CO2, I wonder how effective your reactor is at dissolving them. Is your CO2 running at 24hrs? If not, you may want to try that and monitor from there.

I am currently running with uncountable bubble(too far) with the help of the external reactor. Controlled by a pH controller, already running 24/7 since day 1 as it has not drop below the setting value of 6.9pH.

Instead of adding peat moss, will you consider putting ADA Africana in your sump tank, they should last longer than peat moss and a more stable pH.

Most of us are quite skeptical in measuring co2 by bps. Quite uncountable after say. 3 - 5 bps.
How long a period between the time when you start co2 and the time you measure PH? Due to the large volume of the tank, it will take slightly longer to have even co2 throughout the tank, assuming circulation is good. This will lead to another issue, are you using one single outlet for the outflow after the reactor?
For better overall circulation both for water and co2, you may consider stretching a rainbar across the length of your tank and using a small pump to drive the co2 mist across the rainbar. Up your co2 and then measure PH a couple of hours after co2 is on.
By the way, I am curious why do you want PH to be lower than 7?

How i wish my PH is stable at 7 - 7.1, im using coral chips from NA with daily water top up, but PH usually drops to 6 at the end of the week when i do my wc.
I don't think 0.1 to 0.2 PH lower is going to make a difference.

Was back and the pH value was around 7.1 to 7.2 this morning. I think I will leave it at this pH value and see how the plants and Rummy Nose do.
Thanks so much for all your input, and please do advise if you have any or you face same problem before when using under sump tank.
